Wolfsburg have cleared the path for Alexander Hleb to make a return to the Barclays Premier League in January after the German club declined to extend loan deal.

The former Arsenal midfielder joined Barcelona in 2008 before heading to Germany with Stuttgart on loan, who, in turn loaned him to Birmingham last season.

However, persistent injuries have hindered his progress in the Bundesliga and Wolfsburg officials have now indicated that he will not be offered a permanent deal.

The Bundesliga side said in a statement on Tuesday that Hleb will leave the club on December 31.

Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath said: 'This is very, very unfortunate. I would have gladly taken up the option to sign Hleb (permanently) but the recurring injury problems prevent that.'

The Belarus international made only four league appearances, three as a substitute, since joining on the final day of the transfer window in August.

On his imminent exit, Hleb said: '(This setback) hits me hard, of course, because I'd great plans here in Germany.'
