Guest Lens
A gunman has survived being wounded 21 times by police in a street shoot-out in New York. Angel Alvarez is in a critical condition in hospital but is expected to live. Doctors said the bullets – fired by four police officers – missed his vital organs. The twenty-three-year-old was shot in the arms, legs, abdomen and jaw but is able to talk. The shoot-out took place early on Sunday morning in Harlem, New York, after Alvarez shot and killed a love rival, 23- year-old Luis Soto, at a street party. Police who had been monitoring the party opened fire on Alvarez after witnesses said he turned his gun on them. A total of 50 shots were fired, 46 of them coming from police weapons. Alvarez was hit at least 21 times. One of the police officers was hit in the chest by a stray bullet and another was grazed on the hand. Officer Michael Tedeschi suffered bruising to his chest from the gunshot, but police said his life had been saved by his vest. Three bystanders were also wounded by the gunfire. ‘People were running everywhere, grabbing kids and tripping over each other,’ said one witness. New York mayor Michael Bloomberg said the shooting outlined the dangers of illegal guns. He asked: ‘How much longer are we as a nation going to wait before we get serious about stopping illegal guns from getting into the hands of people who mean to do harm to others?’ .Police said Alvarez had been arrested eight times before for violent offences. New York police chief Ray Kelly said his officers had been justified in using deadly force. suttin isn't addin up there's four man they shoot 50 bullets between them and hit man 21 times somewhere along the line they musta thought he was dead already, or at least not a threat, yet continue firing. and the police chief stands by them?

Guest TimeBomb
thats a terrible ratio for the police... 21/46 considering they train regularly with the weapon. and he got 2 out of 4.
