John Aldridge slams Sam Allardyce after Rafa Benitez attackSep 18 2007 By David Prentice, Liverpool Echo ANFIELD legend John Aldridge jumped to the defence of Reds boss Rafael Benitez today, after Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce claimed he was âlucky to be still in a job.â The outspoken Toon boss, who saw his side beaten 1-0 at Derby last night, claimed: âRafa would be very lucky to be in a job if he hadnât got to two Champions League finals, because they've had some very poor finishes in the Premier League.âWhile they are a very good Champions League team, theyâre not a Premier League winning side. They donât have the mentality to win that yet. âBeing a foreigner, Rafa doesnât understand itâs supposed to be Premier League first and Champions League second.â His comments appeared in Zoo magazine, but Aldridge, who had a number of high profile run-ins with Allardyce during his time as Tranmere boss, the former Liverpool striker and he said today: âYou ask Alex Ferguson how difficult it is to get to two Champions League finals. Should he be sacked?Story continues ADVERTISEMENTâRafa has done a marvellous job at Liverpool and had a massive task to overhaul a very poor squad when he first arrived.âBut there has been a lot of dead wood to clear out, which he has done, as well as winning the FA Cup and the Champions League along the way.âOf course, Liverpool still have to win the Premier League, but Rafa will have at least another two or three years to try and achieve that.âSam should really focus on his own job. He knows the Press will highlight any comments and he shouldnât put himself into that situation.âBut double standards is not something new for Sam. He claimed he was the first manager to introduce the lone striker system into this country, the formation which proved so successful for him at Bolton.âIn fact, I brought that system in at Tranmere and it took us to a League Cup final and two FA Cup quarter-finals, when we beat Bolton on the way.ââSam couldnât come to terms with the system and he ended up adopting it himself, even to the extent of using Gareth Farrelly to take long throw-ins.â
How can Aldo who isn't even a manager be more sucessful than Fat Sam biggrin.gif He should know his levels got taken for a mug

Glad the story and Derby defeat amused some spurs fans, you need light relief with your lots scenario. Glasshouses an that. Comments are true so come off it. if Fergie or Mourinho said it you'd be sucking them off. Benitez' credentails can't be denied though and it looks like he's focused on the league now he's not 'lucky' with his sucess, but 'lucky' he's got a patient board. Liverpool fans back up as well cause you know if it weren't for 2005 you'd want him out (some of your we're calling for it last season!).

Allardyce - overachieved at sh*t clubBenitez - is he doing better/worse or as he should be doing? Both are in the same league the premiership but are in completely different zones in terms of expectations/pressure etc. The CL win has saved his job cause otherwise an F.A cup in 3 season wouldn't/shouldn't be suffiecient enough for a liverpool boss and proably should merit the sack. I'm not cussing Benitez i rate himhighly from valencia days but as a premiership coach i wouldn't put him up there with the other big 3 (now 2) yet.Infamous weak argument - The sh*t squad argument don't run with me he's been there 3 and a bit years its his squad! and he's been selling his own players after 1 season sometimes - Palleta, Bellamy, Gonzales, Josemi and i know theres more. If uniteds and Chelsea squads were better equiped and playin better football then thats down to benitez 20 points behind is a bad season for a top 4 club. Your honestly telling me finishes of 5th, 3rd and 3rd are satisfying as a liverpool fan? and for the record quit afew pool fans were calling for benitez to be sacked last season.

Boy I watched my team go through finishing 7th to 4th when we got into top 3 I was delighted boy.People need to realise the club has been in transition for the past 18 seasons or so the only one that is a exception being 2001.I'm not too fussy if we finished 3rd BUT we need to be closer than last year around 8-10 points between us and the leaders.I'm not a Man utd fan that expects us to win the league every year i'm willing to wait a bit fot the league title.
