  1. Paul Gascoigne has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act after being arrested in Newcastle on Wednesday. The former England star has endured numerous emotional problems since his retirement from the game. He has battled against alcohol-related and drug problems for years as he struggled to come to terms with life without football. The latest incident occurred at hotel in Gateshead on Wednesday evening when Northumbria police responded to a concerned call. DetainedA statement released by the police said: "Police attended the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead yesterday evening after we received a report of concern for a 40-year-old who was staying at the hotel. "The man was detained under the Mental Health Act and no-one was injured during the incident." Once regarded as one of the world's best footballers, Gascoigne's playing career was plagued by personal problems, many linked to his heavy drinking. He has has been treated on a number of occasions for drink and mental health problems. In 2005, he was hospitalised with pneumonia, sparking fears over his long-term health, and last year he underwent emergency surgery for a perforated stomach ulcer. SensitiveA spokeswoman for Hilton Hotels said Gascoigne had been at the hotel for only a day and there was no trouble before police arrived. "He had only been staying with us for one night. He checked in on Wednesday morning," she said. "The call actually came in from the police so it was not from the Hilton. "From our end the police call came in and we were obviously happy to help but there was nothing that happened at the hotel to make us think that there was anything wrong and once the police arrived that evening, he was escorted peacefully away." She added: "It's a very sensitive situation."

  3. Arsenalâs previous recruitment of two Spaniards provoked anger from Barcelona, but the imminent signing of Ignasi Miquel is being completed without fuss. The 15-year-old, who was released by the Catalan club, has been converted into a powerful centre back by Unión Deportiva Cornellà , a team on the outskirts of Barcelona. Arsenal faced competition from Manchester United and Celtic for his signature, but Miquel has decided that he wants to follow in the footsteps of Cesc Fà bregas, 20, and Fran Mérida, 17, who joined Arsenal after coming through the Barcelona academy. The three players have the same agent, Joseba DÃaz.Andrés Manzano, the Cornellà sporting director, is expected to arrive in London this week to agree a compensation package. Arsenal paid £700,000 for Fà bregas and £2.2 million to Barcelona on behalf of Mérida after a Spanish civil court ruled in October that the younger midfield player had broken an agreement he had signed with the Catalan club. Manzano said that Arsenal showed the most enthusiasm of all the clubs interested in the player. âMiquel is very strong physically and outstanding in the air,â Manzano said. âHeâs also very comfortable [on the ball], with a good left foot. The sale will fund 700 kids in our youth set-up.âMiquel, 6ft 3in, will sign a professional contract with Arsenal when he turns 16 in October. He began his career at Espanyol before spending five years playing at left back for the Barcelona youth team, but the Catalan club believed that he was not good enough technically. He spent three days in London last week being shown around the training ground, the Emirates Stadium and the accommodation for the youth players. He also spoke to Fà bregas and Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, who convinced him that he had an opportunity to break into the first team within a few years. He returned to Barcelona last Thursday âdazzledâ by the offer.Miquel came to prominence with impressive displays for Spain Under-16 against Scotland, Norway and Portugal during a tournament in Oporto this month. He was spotted by Francis Cagigao, the Arsenal scout who alerted Wenger to Fà bregas.

  6. Arsenal dominated last night. The only thing was our finishing, reminded me of last season when we would try and be to intricate. Also Hleb needs to start shooting i swear and fabsys shots were looking weak. Adebayor was unlucky near the end should have buried that header, but he was a constant threat all night, you could see that AC couldnt handle him.
