A gang of robbers have stolen tens of thousands of pounds worth of valuables from a shopping centre in west London.

Jewellers De Beers and Tiffany & Co were targeted in the raid

The thieves used sledgehammers to break into Westfield mall in the early hours of the morning.

An alarm alerted security to the gang but the raiders sped off in several cars.

It is the first time the complex, which is Europe's largest urban mall, has been burgled in this way.

The attack on De Beers and Tiffany & Co appears to be the latest in a series of smash-and-grab raids on jewellers and luxury shops in London.

Valuables worth more than £4m have been snatched from stores including Dolce & Gabbana, Cartier and Watches of Switzerland.

In a foray at the Mozafarian store in Knightsbridge last August, gems worth over £1m were stolen in less than a minute.

Police said they were told there was a "burglary in progress" at Westfield at 1.20am.

"A group of up to 10 people forced access to the premises before breaking into two jewellery shops and making off with a quantity of goods," the Metropolitan Police spokesman said.

A Westfield spokeswoman said a "quantity of jewellery" was stolen but the centre would open as normal.

She added: "Westfield is working closely with the Metropolitan Police to identify suspects and recover property."

The shopping complex pays for its own private security staff and police teams.

Senior police officers were so concerned about the amount of crime that may take place in the centre they agreed to build extra police cells before it opened in 2008.
