THAT SHOW CALLED THE WIRE

FACE OFF

Recommended Posts

from the writer's words : its about the city, and about how we live together. It's about how institutions have an effect on individuals, and how... whether you're a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a politician, a judge [or] lawyer, you are ultimately compromised and must contend with whatever institution you've committed to."
You idiot. You're going to scare them all off.Don't listen to him everyone. Really it's just a soap opera about drug dealers.
lol, thats the way i sell it to people. no need to sugarcoat it. anyone with a fully fucntioning brain will get hooked after series 2.

The Shield is a more traditional cops-and-robbers show. It's a brilliant show with fantastic writing, and some of the best acting I've EVER seen on television. Seriously, can't even stress enough how good these guys fill out their characters. One defining thing about the Shield is that it's so atmospheric... the acting, the direction, the script... all of it combines, and the f*cking tension and grit is thick and tangible in every single scene. But mainly The Shield is a character-driven show. It does pose questions about morality and ethics; about crime and community; and the blurred line between enforcers of the law, and the people who live to defy it. But more than anything, it's a show about the tribulations of certain characters, and its lifeblood is portraying (amazingly well) the adrenaline, drama, dilemmas, struggles, etc, that they go through. The Wire is (imo) much more adventurous and daring. It's not defined by its characters (though they are the recognisable face of the show), it's really driven by the grander themes that it addresses. It's a commentary about the decay of society, the institutional problems faced by Baltimore (and all other inner cities), the causes and casualties of those problems, and the external forces which condemn these communities to these situations. It's an examination of urban society itself, and pointing out how the cities of America (and the West in general) are genuinely f*cked up and broken. I forget who said it (one of the cast/crew), but they nailed it when they said "The Wire holds up a mirror to America, and says, 'this is what you really look like'."And it does all of this incredibly artistically, without becoming preachy or high-and-mighty. Not to mention that it is flawlessly-acted, has the best writing of any TV show in history (except maybe The Sopranos or The West Wing), and imaginative and daring direction. The Wire really is on a whole different planet to most other TV shows which people make a fuss about (24, Heroes, Prison Break, Lost, etc)

oh i see, but im the one scaring them off? then you decided to write a book. thats cos you cant properly explain it cos like youve pointed out its not like anything else out there. and like you said : said "The Wire holds up a mirror to America, and says, 'this is what you really look like'." thats why they dont wanna watch it (some say cos its also not a majority white cast )and its better than sopranos to me, and way more realistic than the shield. i mean.. if the shield was real...bug that 'situation room' and case closed. its hard to pick flaws in the wire

biggrin.gif Apologies, that's what happens when I'm bored at 5amYeah the Shield is not realistic at all, it's not really intended to be. If a Vic Mackey existed in real life, he'd in prison/kicked off the force/dead/etc within a couple of episodes of the first season. I don't know whether The Wire is better than The Sopranos... they're both excellent shows, and both very different. Maybe The Wire trumps other shows because of its importance and relevance in today's world. But aside from that, in terms of quality of the art itself, there's a tier of TV dramas which are head-and-shoulders above the rest (The Wire, West Wing, Sopranos, Oz, The Shield, [band Of Brothers?]) and it's hard to rank them in relation to one another. They're different shows which aim to do different things

And yeah there's a lot of reasons why The Wire will never get the props it truly deserves1. It humanises crime & drug dealers -- paints a picture of them which isn't just "evil demonic bastards destroying our communities". America doesn't wanna see that sh*t. They like their bad guys to be bad guys. Not humans with souls, problems, choices, families; caught in certain circumstances which lead them to how they are. 2. It shatters the "Just say no"/"Zero tolerance" approach to drugs for the idiocy that it really is... not a very popular stance in America3. It uses a lot of ghetto characters, dialogue, etc... with dense Baltimore ghetto slang which is completely alien to Eric from Nebraska and Erica from Oregon4. No real big-name "star" to the show... it consists of lots of bit-parts and small roles. The real star is Baltimore itself, but there's no big-name/big-face actor that will draw in the ratings.5. Very fluid cast, which is too unorthodox for TV audiences. Without posting spoilers, loads of the best-loved characters get killed off, which enrages an audience that likes to connect with a central core of characters, & watch their lives over many seasons. The most-liked people on the show drop like flies, and each time a small part of the audience is discouraged off it...6. It illustrates how the problems of crime & poverty are compounded and entrenched by corrupt politics, by failing schools, by hopeless media... their society is broken, and America at large doesn't like to acknowledge that7. Too many black faces8. Too complex - average TV watcher doesn't want to see big themes and nuanced commentaries about complicated societal issues.... they wanna see sex drugs and violenceetc, etc...There's SO many things working against it, it's really amazing that it's survived to the end of its run. Testament to HOW BLOODY GOOD IT IS

Yeah, I been watching the Wire. I used to see it randomly on FX late at night, and from those few episodes I saw I thoguht it was live. I haven't got season 1, but I got season 2-4, and whilst it seems slow and not as gripping as I thoguht beofre, I will hold out faith and continue watching. When I was at uni, all I used to do was atch films and programs because the midlands was so boring. If I didn't have these, I don't know how I would have coped.

season 2 was definitely the worst from the 1st three, but it wasn't that bad, what episode are u up 2 ?
I think either 7 (Backwash) or 8 (Duck and Cover).Don't get it twisted, I will stick it out because I have seen sick episodes before. Must have been in another season.
