Thomas Vermaelen has been named the EA SPORTS Player of the Month for August. The Belgian defender scooped the official Club prize after a string of powerful performances at the heart of the Arsenal back four.Thomas made a dream debut at Goodison Park, heading home Robin van Persie's free-kick to give Arsenal a two-goal lead. They went on to win 6-1 as the new boy adapted quickly to English football. The summer signing from Ajax was just as impressive at Celtic in the Champions League, making a number of timely blocks and interceptions while developing a strong partnership with William Gallas.Thomas' standards remained high in his three other August games against Portsmouth, Celtic and Manchester United and he has been recognised by the Arsenal fans with 34.9 per cent of the votes cast.Gallas, who scored three goals last month, finished second in our poll with 22.5 per cent. Andrey Arshavin was third.AUGUST PLAYER OF THE MONTH RESULTS Player % of votesThomas Vermaelen 34.9%William Gallas 22.5%Andrey Arshavin 15.6%Others 17%

The Arsenal fans have got it right, according to Arsène Wenger. The Frenchman believes the supporters were correct to make Thomas Vermaelen the EA Sports Player of the Month for August. Voters on Arsenal.com gave the Belgian defender 35 per cent of the poll. His centre back partner William Gallas was second with 23 per cent. Wenger thought this was perceptive voting.“I believe that is good recognition for the quality of Thomas’ performances,” the manager told Arsenal.com. “Certainly there is a little surprise factor in that. People did not expect him to perform that way straight away and he was not well known before he came here. But it is well deserved.“Second in the list is Gallas and that shows our defenders looked quite stable.”Vermaelen was Arsenal’s only major purchase in the transfer window and Wenger went as far to suggest the 23-year-old’s early form justified his prudence. “What we did during the transfer period created some anxiety amongst our fans,” said the manager. “But in the end, I am sure the fans are comforted by our decision to buy Vermaelen.”

Made a great start, fully expecting him to get a injury soon though. Its just what happens to us.

Impressed. However I think most people will judge him on performances against the likes of Torres and Drogba. What he does against a on-form Adebayor might offer a bigger picture view.
