Mr. Gayle
NEW YORK (AP) -- Allen Iverson has agreed in principle to a $4 million, two-year contract with the Turkish professional team Besiktas. Iverson is expected to officially sign with the club this weekend and will begin his overseas career the week of Nov. 8. His management team put out a release Thursday night. Iverson and Besiktas officials will hold a press conference Friday in New York. "He's ecstatic," Iverson's manager, Gary Moore, said by phone. "He's very excited, very happy the people in Turkey want him, the people in Turkey appreciate what he brings to the game, and he can't wait to get over there. Guest TimeBomb
aint too familiar with the NBA but why did allan iverson sign for a turkish team? and is turkey a big basketball nation outside of USA?
Superstition
Turkey did come 2nd in the world championships during the summer, but Spain, Italy and Greece have the strongest leagues outside the USA. The Turkish league is probably the 4th/5th best. On top of the domestic league, his club (Besiktas) are in the basketball equivalent of Europa league (the 2nd-tier European competition) Iverson essentially can't find an NBA team who will sign him now. He's been struggling since '08 really, skills are declining somewhat (but not entirely, he can still contribute), and he's bounced around couple teams, having trouble adjusting to getting less playing time and/or coming off the bench. He left his last two teams abruptly after 2 months (Memphis) and 3 months (Philly), so now NBA managers are seeing him as too unreliable and unstable. He was always a troubled and erratic personality, but in years past his transcendent ability made it worth the hassle for teams; now it doesn't. It's sad, genuinely troubled guy with real family/personal issues (inc hints of alcohol problems), who has spiralled out of the league despite his Hall of Fame talent, going abroad for his next chance
Mr. Gayle
Its a shame I remember when he come into the game, King of the crossovers.
