Ok...Nylon stringed guitars are generally used for Classical Acoustic guitars (spanish guitars) - where you will be playing more finger pick orientated pieces, like classical spanish, flamenco, or "romantic" sounding ones. Nylon strings have a warm sound, but do not have the level of resonance, or volume, that steel strings have.Steel stringed guitars are the typical normal "acoustic" guitar. Your average solo performer or band will use them. Steel strings are much louder (although it does depend on the body of the guitar), are somewhat harder to produce a clear sound from (ill get to the details in a minute), and are used much more prominantly, and almost exclusively in the guitar riffs you find in rnb/rap and popular music.Steel strings have a loud, resonant sound, and are better if you are performing and singing, or recording for popular music.When you're choosing your guitar, you have to consider the "action" as well. The action is the distance between the strings and the fretboard. A low action will make it easier for your fingers to depress the strings and get a good sound, but volume and tone will be compromised. A high action will give you more volume and tone, but will be incredibly difficult to depress, and if you're only just starting out you will have "stubbed" notes which won't sound properly.You can get light, medium, and heavy gauge steel strings for normal acoustics - if you're starting off, get light gauge, and work your way up.The best brands of normal acoustic are Taylor/Guild/Gibson. You might be hard pressed to find anything with these three within your budget, so I'd suggest checking out Yamaha. They are not the best, but they have a reputation for making excellent instruments.Whatever you do, dont get a budget starter pack which you can get from most music stores. The guitars will be sh*t.Lastly, for types of songs featuring acoustics etc...Anything by Teedra Moses, Tearrai Mari uses acoustics and classical acoustics, craig david uses alot of standard acoustics. You will know the sound when you hear it.Thats the basics, theres a few more things you have to consider like the shape of the guitar body (a wider body will give a deeper, louder sound, but might have less clarity than a smaller one), and whether or not you want a semi acoustic (an acoustic with a mic pickup built in and a lead out so you can amp the guitar).PM me if you want more details or recordings etc, i've got a few acoustics/classical acoustics which I could record to demonstrate what kinda differences you're looking at.
