Been lurking on the forum for a while now decided to post 'cause I think some people on here may be able to help,So I'm beginning a new fashion based project at college, decided to base it on 80's old school hip hop. I've been looking at the 5 boroughs of New York, how hip hop began in Brooklyn, how the other aspects of hip hop where formed (i.e graffiti and breakdance in harlem etc)Also been looking at old groups like salt n pepa, run d.m.cI'm going for the whole rope chain, windbreaker, high top lookBut I'm kinda struggling with my initial research, can anyone give me any pointers as to what things to be looking at? or what old school hip hop/the ols school hip hop movement means to them?Any help is appreciated :)

You really could do the research on your own but because i have nothing better to do:You can look at the timeline of hip-hop& probably look into the origin of the word itself "Hip Hop"Did you know it was first used by African Bambaata who was a dj in the 80s (dunno if he is still..) & was very influental in the formation of hip hop music. Before that MCs just shouted it out or something but African M gave the word it's own genre basically. He actually changed his name to African Bambaata after a visit to Africa & he worked with a Zulu group Black Spades (woop woop my people reppin!) & they also influenced hip hop & therefore spreadin it in the world. Therefore influencing the south african music which is called kwaito to an extent so you can look at it from that angle. So it's not only america you can look at you can take many angles depending on which direction you want to go into. But that might be a better direction as most people usually do the obvious such as paying attention on the obvious & the commercial & today's graffitti which i think is more new school than proper old school. Then you can come back to the recent people such as run dmc, salt n pepper etc& you can also look at the misconceptions of hip hop which is also a very different approach eg: - Rap is hip hop...Which is a very difficult one to argue BUTyou could look at it this way... Rap is more of the recording of hip hop, mc's behind the mic in other words. BUT Hip Hop, REAL Hip Hop FULLY REPRESENTS THE CULTURE IN IT'S TRUE ESSENCE. Don't forget to say it's your opinion tho!! Because like i said it's a touchy subject.Since you are doing fashion you can look at this misconception.- Baggy clothes came from hip-hopWhich is WRONG....Baggy clothes where introduced to hip-hop by the West Coast Family. THE WHOLE CONCEPT OF BUYING CLOTHES THREE SIZES BIGGER TO GET THAT FULL BAGGY LOOK HAS BEEN PART OF THE CALI SUBCULTURE SINCE THE EARLY ZOOT SUIT DAYS AND HAS NEVER DIED. IN THE EARLY 80'S WHILE NYC HEADS WERE WEARING NUT HUGGERS CALI WAS SPORTIN LOCKER PANTS, DOUBLE PLEATED COTTLERS, PARACHUTE PANTS ECT..THE FIRST EAST COAST HEADS TO START WEARING MORE BAGGY FITS WERE THE FREESTYLE AND WEBO DANCERS, AND BY THEN IT BECAME MORE POPULAR AT HIP HOP EVENTS DURING THE LATE 80'S..& you said you were going to look at break dancing. Which is another misconception when it comes to Hip Hop.It is a media term. In Hip Hop they use the term BBoy which means break boy, beat boy or bronx boy.I could go on & on so i will stop because i think i have done half you c/w nw.. man i wish i was doing fashion!!!!Anyways pm me if you need anymore help x

missbee thanks very much that's very useful especially the baggy jeans part, that's something I can fit into my workI did find out about the history of hip hop myself don't get me wrong I've done my research I know all my facts and figures...I jus noticed a lot of people on here are into hip hop, wanted personal views of it.What does it mean to you? What one artist/item of clothing/song sums up 'Hip hop'Has it/How does it effect your daily life?I'm tryna concentrate on the New York area as it's only a six week project, wanna stick to the early fruity hip hop :)Without peoples personal opinions it's gonna be hard to translate the concept into a tangeable fashion piece. This forum is jus one of a few places I've asked this question :)

No prob hunErm hip hop it is music that represents it's era and it's people i guess.. Like i am not a rap person but i could listen to hip-hop. Real hip hop.. it's kind of puts you in a sense of euphoria where you really feel the music sort of like soul..& i love salt n peppa lol. I just like the way they are so individual and the way the music is ust free & not constrained by the love of selling CDs or franschising lol. People where soooo different back then.. now music is pretty much the sameThat's my opinion anyways

honestly, this may not be helpful but why base your project on something that has been done to death or currently flavour of the month. You are going for the rope chain, wind breaker look etc Whats the point when loads of other companies have researched and basically produced the answer you are looking for a hundred times over (and most likely better than you could produce).Unless you are willing to put a radical spin on it i don't see why you would bother doing it. Its probably too late to change your design proposal though.

It is just a project to represent hip hop. She is not trying to sell any products. It's only college remember she is just trying to represent it as best as she can for a good grade even if she has to research & state things that have been done already. That's why i sugested looking at misconceptions as well.Do a spin to the project & show what is not hip-hop. A kind of satire project that forces the meaning of what hip hop really is by ridiculing how it's been commercialised. Then you could represent it in it's fullness to show the contrast or something if people won't get it.I don't know something like that..
