Spanish reports insist Tottenham are closing in on the capture of Tiago and Juande Ramos admits he is looking for a midfield hard-man. Ramos faces Roy Keane this weekend with Sunderland coming to White Hart Lane and the Spaniard admits he would love a player like him. "Players like Roy Keane are essential in any team," said Ramos. "I loved him as a player. "He had such personality and energy which he brought to the group and sadly those players are disappearing little by little. "You can never say there won't be a player like him again, but it's just very difficult to find one with such a strong character and personality. "I don't know why it's the case that there are no longer players like him, it's something a footballer carries inside himself. It's not something you can teach, it's something you have naturally." Deal close?A player in Keane's mould is Tiago - who is seemingly keen to move back to England. The former Chelsea man is currently with Juventus - where he has failed to recapture the form he showed at Lyon, who signed him from Stamford Bridge. Now Spurs appear favourites to land Tiago ahead of the likes of Portsmouth, Newcastle and Atletico Madrid. It is reported that Tiago's agent Jorge Mendes has held talks with Spurs and is close to agreeing a three-year deal for the 26-year-old. With the Carling Cup semi-final second leg due against Arsenal next week - Ramos may be tempted to field a weaker side against Sunderland. "Obviously it's very important because it gives us the possibility of playing in a cup final and getting a European place," Ramos said. "It's a different competition to the league. We want to go in against Sunderland as motivated as possible but obviously the Arsenal game is very important."

Juande To Rescue Miguel From Mestalla. The 28 year old has become available after falling foul of the new disciplinarian coach at Valencia- Ronald Koeman. The White Hart Lane club are looking to strengthen all across the back line, and recently had an £8 million bid for Rangers Alan Hutton rebuffed. This development has reportedly unsettled Pascal Chimbonda, who has voiced his intention to leave. Valencia have raised the possibility of a cash plus player swap with Spurs involving Chimbonda so a quick deal could be on the cards, although Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Newcastle are tracking Chimbonda.Juande Ramos knows Miguel from his time in Spain and rates him highly. The former Benfica full back has 45 caps for Portugal and has always stated his desire for a move to England one day.Chelsea and Arsenal were linked with the player last year before he signed a new 5 year contract in September.Tottenham also look set to complete the signing of Miguelâs international team-mate Tiago this week from Juventus. The former Chelsea and Lyon midfielder is determined to leave the Turin giants after falling out of favour with trainer Claudio Ranieri. âI can't stay here any longerâ said Tiago. âThe best thing for me would be to leave.â Although personal terms have yet to be agreed, it is expected that he will complete a £9.7 million move very soon.

In the Tottenham dressing room I pinned up a motto: âThe Team is the Starâ. If any player sums up that philosophy, itâs Robbie Keane. Normally itâs not the best combination to have a striker as your skipper. Robbie is different. Heâll do any job a manager asks and seeks togetherness with teammates socially as well as on the pitch. Character-wise, if you had 11 Robbie Keanes on your side, youâd have a chance of winning any game. Robbie doesnât play the game for personal accolades but deserves any which come his way, and yesterday he reached 100 against Sunderland. Only two other players in the past 30 years have reached a century. Their identities, Teddy Sheringham and Glenn Hoddle, show how special it is. At Spurs, Robbie is appreciated, the fans regularly voting him player of the year, but I wonder whether in the country he gets the recognition he deserves. He is only 27 and hardly any other striker in England comes up with the goods so regularly. Heâs worth £15m to £20m - at least. Nobody scored more times in the Premier League in the calendar year of 2007 than Robbie. But the statistic which is even more revealing involves his number of goals away from home. Itâs about 50%, and itâs a very rare footballer who performs as well in hostile stadiums as on his own ground. In my time as Spurs manager, Dimitar Berbatov didnât come close to 50%. Robbieâs consistency is a result of his coolness and character. Itâs a big reason why after two years of saying âI have three first-choice strikers though only two can playâ, I changed my policy and announced âRobbie is my No 1â. In my first six months it was difficult for Robbie, he was a substitute almost as often as he played from the start. He moaned, like most footballers would, but his effort and performance didnât drop in training or in games. He scored a number of important goals during that period coming on as a substitute and that reflected well on him. Many strikers you put on the bench sit there with a miserable face and when you send them on, their attitude is: âIâm only involved for 20 minutes, what can I do? If I donât score nobody will complain.â Robbie would charge onto the pitch, desperate to get a goal and a win for the team. And when he played from the start and I substituted him, he hated it. Heâd rather stay on the pitch and move to left-back than clock off early. This made him a great player to have when you needed to make a tactical change. You could tell Robbie to move wide and close down the full-backs to stop the opposition starting attacks from the flanks, and heâd do it happily. Similarly, with Berbatov being a real No 9 I needed his partner to be more of a No 10 and Robbie adapted without asking questions. He developed into a good provider of assists. When I first set eyes on the Tottenham squad, I would not have put Robbie among those who stood out as natural athletes. Then we did the physical tests. Quickest over 10 yards? Robbie. Over 20? Robbie was second only to Ledley King. Stamina? He was near the top in those tests. Later, Aaron Lennon would arrive and take the mantle of the clubâs top speed merchant but Robbie (and Ledley) still ran him close. On top of that, Iâd seldom seen a player who could score in such a variety of ways. Robbie gets goals with his right foot, left foot, from volleys, chips and free kicks. The only things he canât do are tackle and head the ball. He has an ability with penalties which is almost unique - most players decide in advance which side theyâll put the ball but Robbie runs up, watches the keeper and makes his choice in the very last milliseconds. Off the pitch he can be a funny guy. Iâve always enjoyed having Irishmen in my dressing room. They love companionship. In my experience, they do everything they can to ensure thereâs a good atmosphere and spirit, whether itâs organising games on the team bus or sitting down next to a guy who is by himself in the training ground canteen. Andy Reid was similar. I remember on a preseason trip to France, Andy and Robbie leading everyone in a round of singing until 4am. I didnât want to stop them, I thought: âThis is what a football team is all about.â In Holland we say: âBe a man in the night and a man in the morning.â That means if you want to stay out until the early hours having a drink, donât be a sissy the next day. Be a man and get on with your work. Irish players are like that. Robbie is good at making new players welcome. Some fans didnât agree, but when Ledley was injured he was my automatic choice to be captain. It puzzled me that only once during my time did another club - Everton - try to buy him. I look at some of the strikers being signed by Europeâs top clubs and think Robbieâs better. It would have been nice if goal No 100 had come against Arsenal on Tuesday but I knew Robbie would score yesterday.Source : Martin Jol for the Times497e6904cd89f82f0c033b2b5933a23d.jpg

No he went on sick at inter when given the chance just didn't get enough games but more than proved himself good enough. His problem was battling with names such as Ronaldo, Vieiri and Recoba. Very decent player

Axed keeper Paul Robinson has handed in a transfer request - but he won't be allowed to leave Tottenham until the summer.Robinson's decision has rocked Spurs before tomorrow night's vital Carling Cup semi-final second leg clash with Arsenal. The goalkeeper, 28, has been left out of the side for the last four games in favour of Radek Cerny and there were reports that he told the club he wanted a move after being dropped for the first leg against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium two weeks ago. This was denied but when he was again on the bench for the trip to Chelsea nine days ago, Robinson decided he wanted to move on.Manchester City have been monitoring his situation this month, but Spurs will not sell until they find a replacement and that is proving difficult.
