Academic Thread

My older bro is academically 1 of the most well rounded people I know (4 As at A Level, 1st from Cambridge) but wasn't able to find himself a job for the year after graduating because he graduated at the height of the recession (or so Cambridge careers officers said)

Instead he's decided to go London College of Law and get whatever qualifications he can from there, he's finishing his 1st year and I don't think has been offered a training contract at any top law firm

He could be the most unlucky person ever (his work exp is pretty solid aswell) but when I'm seeing that it just massively demoralises me and makes me think I should try another way of planning for my future, luckily for me I've been quite involved in the music industry and have secured myself a placement at EMI this summer but if I didn't pursue the music side of things (which was always said to be a 'waste of time') I'd probably have nothing else

Life is so damn fickle

that is f*ckin NUTS!

has he been persistently applying tho? the economy will recover and its best to get any job you can, rather than stick by another course if you dont know whether its gonna lead to anything.

what course did he take at cambridge? id be screwing if i was in that postion. has he tried considering other fields to cross over? anything beats having to get more qualifications (unless thats what your into).

Did Economics, and I guess the only thing detrimenting him might have been him not persistently applying, I assume he did but it's the only reason I can see him not being in a job

Hopefully for his sake he secures a training contract this year because after all the work he's done on an academic level he deserves a job at the end of it

Apparently at Cambridge their careers office tells them a statistic that something like 97% of people who get a degree there find a job within a year, very unlucky to fall into the 3%

It's because of his situation I started up my own business, providing myself with employment and, if anything else, commercial awareness which is a very good trait to have according to employers

good exam, got me feeling positive

friday's discrete maths will be a challenge but I should get a decent result - really hoping I didn't mess up in the continuous maths exam before that I think I did sh*t in, would be quite nice not to have to do retakes

edit: ahh man, I hate proofs

South bank is a terrible uni, but where d'you get the idea of creative writing being a rebore lit/lang? As far as I know the emphasis in the course is on producing your own work in different mediums (radio, screen, print etc)

M12 are you saying that due to your opinion of the degree, the degree and the uni, or the lols, I did lol but I'd like to know your actual opinion. If it's because of the degree itself then is it due to what you see as a lack of job opportunities and academic clout?

The degree is worthless from that university and not that much better from any other.

Literally not worth the paper it's written on and waste of £9000 IF you're relying on it to enhance employability. If you're doing it solely because it's something you want to do and are interested in then go for it as long as you can afford it but be aware it's very unlikely to be helpful in terms of employment.

being 100% honest, I think due to the poor rep of the uni and the fact creative writing isnt a respected course, you would definintely struggle to get a job afterwards. You could go there and learn things that could help you to go solo and write your own stuff, but in terms of employability i dont think it will enhance your life. I dont see any direct prospects and i cant think of many employers who would hold you in high regard for doing it.

It sounds to me like you're forcing the uni issue. Take time, you are potentially gonna be working for the next 40 years. delaying it by 1,2 or even 5 isnt that serious a thing.

Try the stamford test and just general searching and see what you think suits your personality and will get you money

You dont even need to go to uni to be sucessful tbh. go on www.notgoingtouni.co.uk theres plenty of careers on there that you can build for yourself.

What did you do/ get at a-levels?

And yeah it's out of interest Yuri, however I'd think it'd be beneficiary if the employment I was looking for was in the entertainment sector no? cause if it's not then other things I can't see other things I'd wanna take (Film Studies) being much use either, and then there'd be no point in me going uni, I don't wanna be a doctor/lawyer/accountant and it sounds like that's the only thing uni is geared towards.

Doing what in the entertainment sector?

I think industries like entertainment are much more about who you know, not what you know than other industries.
