Bit more on Arshavin * Arshavin was verbally promised he would be sold if an offer of €15m arrived, but Zenit are now holding out for €18m * Arsenal offered €10m rising to €13m, but this, as we know, was rejected * Zenit want all the cash upfront * Arshavin’s agent, the thoroughly infuriating Dennis Lachter, is reported to want €5m in fees for the deal * Arshavin has informed Advocaat he will not play for Zenit again, and has refused to travel with the squad to a camp in the UAEhttp://www.sovsport.ru/gazeta/article-item/317618

Arsene Wenger remains optimistic that Andrei Arshavin will be an Arsenal player before the transfer window closes. The Russian playmaker has been strongly linked with a move to the Gunners throughout January, with a deal believed to be in the process of being thrashed out.His current employers, Zenit St Petersburg, have admitted that they are willing to do business with any potential suitors should their valuation of the player be met.Arshavin has also made no secret of his desire to join one of Europe's top clubs and would welcome the opportunity to accept a new challenge in England. At present, Wenger admits an agreement remains some way off, but has not ruled out the possibility of bringing the talented 27-year-old on board before the 2nd February deadline."We are not close to signing anybody, but we know what we want to do," said the Frenchman."We are not close to making a signing today, so we have no new news. We are in negotiations but we want to respect our principles."ImproveWenger went on to confirm that an potential deal with Zenit is likely to be struck sooner rather than later as he looks to get fresh faces on board as quickly as possible."I am very hopeful," he added."Days? Yes, because the transfer window will close and we have already crossed halfway. It will be days. But, if it doesn't happen then it doesn't happen."We want to continue to improve and focus on what we can improve here with the players we have."

Arsenal's tactical manoeuvres to capture the Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Andrei Arshavin appear to be approaching their end game, with officials from the player's current club inviting Emirates representatives to Russia to discuss details."Zenit have invited Arsenal officials to St Petersburg next Tuesday," Alexei Petrov, a club spokesman, said. "This is to show that Zenit do want to find an option which will be acceptable for everyone."Zenit turned down Arsenal's initial bid of £10m for Arshavin last week but remain keen to seal a deal thought to be closer to the £12m mark. The Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has repeatedly stressed his club's determination to live within realistic financial means before and during the current transfer window.A key figure in Arsenal's pursuit of the Euro 2008 star appears to be the Gunners' majority shareholder, the Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov. Zenit are owned by the Russian energy giants Gazprom and Usmanov is chairman of Gazprominvestholding, the company which manages its international investments. It is believed that Arsenal's chief executive, Ivan Gazidis, will travel to Zenit's home city to carry out negotiations on the Usmanov-brokered deal.http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/ja...l-arsene-wenger
