There is a new release of Ubuntu coming out soon called "Hardy Heron".Hardy Heron allows you to install Ubuntu via windows making it very easy. Then when the setup is done, you'll have a dual boot menu when you start your PC. It makes it very easy for someone who wants to make the change, but has been using windows all their life. See this blog for a much better explanation.Lastly, you may come across some of your hardware not working as well as it did in windows or at all. But i'm pretty sure that is becoming more of a minority.
