With him in the squad, Mazembe reached the African Champions League with Mputu becoming the top goalscorer with 16 strikes in the competition and the Federations Cup.Former coach Claude Le Roy describes Mputu better than Samuel Eto'o who he picked for Cameroon for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France as a 17 year-old.In November 2007 it was reported that English Premiership giants Arsenal were interested in signing Mputu for £4million, with the Congolese striker due in England for a 10 day trial.
