The player wasn't english but SPOKE good englishwas a right sided playerHe was not the BIG signing of the summer but a piece of the jigsaw said Ballague in the first podcastBarry is EnglishCan't play on the rightmakes no sense :s
Its degen trust ... right back but can play CB. and the berger ting he was going anyway werent some spontaneous ruthless decision i reckon timing of it makes it seem like it is though. MON was disappointed to hear the comments coming from berger but i dont reckon they are the reason for this decision. Berger blatantly wasnt in his plans for the future.

Positive comments from Captain Magnifique;

Gareth Barry believes qualifying for the Intertoto Cup is just the start for Martin O'Neill's Villa and last night reflected: "We want to get ourselves back where we belong."With O'Neill anticipating a bust summer in the transfer market, Barry expects a renewed push next term as Villa look to build on a sixth-place finish.Villa will return to action in mid July for the third round stage of the Intertoto as clubs from 50 nations compete for 11 places in the UEFA Cup second qualifying round.And Barry told www.avfc.co.uk: "Hopefully we can do the business in the Intertoto Cup and get ourselves back where we belong."It was always the aim to get that European spot - whether it be through the Intertoto or not. We could have finished as low as eighth if results had gone against us but we put the effort in and I think we deserved at least that sixth spot."We keep continuing to improve and I'm sure next year, with the help of new players, it will be another push."Everybody's gone home happy and I think the fans are pleased with the way we've gone about our business this season."Looking at yesterday's dramatic match, Barry added: "It was an interesting game. There's always twists and turns on the last day of the season and that's the way it was today. You're sort of playing with half an eye on other results."But we got the draw and that was enough to see us into the Intertoto Cup. That's European football and that was always the aim."We scored 71 goals in the League this season and that's a great total - challenging the teams at the top of the table. We scored the most away goals and that shows the sort of football we've played this season. That's why the fans turned up in their numbers all year."Yesterday was all about the style of football we've tried to play all season. In the second-half especially we could have scored five or six. Their keeper made some good saves and we went close on a number of occasions."Finally Barry paid tribute to departing team mate Olof Mellberg as the Swede gifted every travelling fan a Villa shirt to say farewell.The skipper concluded: "It was a great gesture from Olof and the fans appreciated it. They sang his name throughout the 90 minutes."He got a good send-off and it looked like he scored a winner towards the end. That would have been a perfect send-off but it was just the wrong side of the post."
Negative comments from Benitez;
We're in clear over Gareth Barry - Rafa BenitezMay 12 2008by James Pearce, Liverpool EchoRAFA BENITEZ insists Liverpool have done everything by the book in their bid to sign Aston Villa skipper Gareth Barry.Villa manager Martin O’Neill has accused the Reds boss of showing a lack of respect towards the Midlands club.O’Neill dismissed the £10million offer as derisory and slammed Benitez for insinuating there had been ongoing discussions to offload the 27-year-old England midfielder.“I think the right approach when you want to sign a player is to talk to the manager,” Benitez said. “I was talking to Martin O’Neill, I said we would like to sign Gareth Barry and asked what the situation was.“He just said he needed to talk to the owner and I said okay. He will not have any problems with his supporters because he never said to me he wanted to sell Barry.“We were also talking about Scott Carson because they have the option to sign him.“We were just talking about football so why he was so angry I do not know.“I’ve been very clear. The player had said before he wanted to play Champions League football. We knew that and so tried to sign a good player. It’s that simple.“If your captain wants to leave, it’s a problem but that’s football.”
That just sums Rafa's lack of class up IMO.Thats why I don't like him.Barry says he would like to play in the Champions League one day and Benitez snaps back with that.

Unless Alonso goes back to spain then we dont need him.I no he is versatile but we need top players who will improve are starting 11 not are squad.We have been improving are squad since Benitez has came.I believe this is make or break summer for Benitez he cant have excuses if we dont mount a serious title challenge.

Tbh i don't see the sense in replacing Alonso with Barry.I hope he stays for the good of Villa, really interested to see what they do next season.
