A notorious gangster has been recruited by police as the first supergrass in the fight against black-on-black gun crime in London.Darren Mathurin, 25, is under armed guard in a safe house after giving detectives information on at least four underworld killings and an attempted murder. The 28-year-old has also given statements to Scotland Yard's Operation Trident taskforce about shootings, robberies and large-scale drug-dealing.The deal means he will serve only four years in jail after receiving a 16-year sentence. He was already serving six years for possession of a MAC-10 machine pistol. He and his family will then “disappear” with new names and identities and settled well away from his gangland haunts in west London.Mathurin, originally from the Stonebridge estate in Harlesden, approached police while he was awaiting sentencing in connection with a murder and agreed to give information on gangland associates in return for a lighter sentence. He has revealed his own role in a murder in which he acted as a getaway driver and given information on a number of unsolved fatal shootings. Now he is expected to be a key witness for the Crown in a series of Old Bailey trials and police believe his evidence will lead to the conviction of a number of major gangland figures. The deal between Mathurin and police was agreed personally by the Director of Public Prosecutions. It is a major breakthrough for Operation Trident, which fights gun crime within black drug gangs.Detectives often struggle to break a wall of silence around many shootings with gunmen prepared to carry out murders in front of dozens of witnesses confident in the knowledge they will not come forward. One senior detective said: “We hope that if we are successful with these trials then it will act as a deterrent to others who are effectively shooting people in front of crowds of witnesses knowing they can get away with it.”

a lil wikipedia research showed he aint chattin sh*t---Operation Trident or Trident, is a Metropolitan Police Service initiative set up to investigate and inform communities of gun crime in London's black community, with special attention being placed on shootings relating to the illegal sales of drugs. The inititative was set up in March 1998 following a series of shootings in the London boroughs of Lambeth and Brent.
