He’s definitely strong but not a lot of players use him compared to Yun Mago: Fei-Long really is the strongest, isn’t he? He’s definitely got an advantage over most of the cast compared to Yun and Yang. Daigo: There’s no mistaking it, right now he’s the best character in the game. No matter who uses him, the damage off of MK Flame Kick x FADC x Chicken Wing has not changed (laughs). Mago: That takes off a toooon of damage. It’s 140 + 140. MK Flame Kick takes off so much damage that HK Flame Kick isn’t even needed. Tokido: Basically, if your opponent is Fei-Long, you cannot move. There’s really nothing you can do. Daigo: I feel that you really have to fight him as if he’s a “super Blanka” when it comes down to it. When Tokido says you can’t move, that really speaks to the power of Fei-Long. He’s even better in that regard than Sagat was in the original Street Fighter IV.Speaking of which, the question of “How to deal with Fei-Long” seems to hold the key to the future success of the SSF4 AE scene. Are there any tactics that can be used to fend off Fei-Long? Mago: Waiting, being patient is of the upmost importance. You’re going to have to hold steady and try to find a way to irritate Fei-Long in some way. Tokido: Vertical jumps against Rekka-ken? Mago: There’s no real breadth in his movement. Fei-Long cannot do a whole lot from mid to far range. Sure, he has his Rekka-Ken, but if you show that you can properly read that with a vertical jump or a focus attack, you’re going to gain the mental advantage, which is vital. So Focus Attacks are really important too, huh. Mago: I’m not a huge fan of Focus Attacks, but that’s the only good option you have in this situation. (laughs) You need to stay on them until they get fed up with just using their Focus Attack. Daigo: Haha, that’s the phrase of the day huh, “until they get fed up”. I guess that’s how I feel just by looking at Fei. Mago: Crouching LP into Rekka-ken is used to stop your opponents from advancing. The point is to force them to keep retreating until they’re in the corner, so it’s vital that you hold steady and don’t allow him to have his way. It’s kind of like when you’re fighting against Balrog. Who gives Fei-Long a hard time? Mago: Right now the worst match up is against Balrog. Daigo: There aren’t a lot of them around, but Honda also gives Fei a run for his money. Mago: Yeah I am not a fan of that matchup. If a Honda player ends up just turtling and abusing vertical jump, there’s not a whole lot I can do. Daigo: Can you punish Honda’s headbutt? Mago: If you block it while standing (ed. note: as oppposed to crouching block), yes. But for Honda it doesn’t matter if it hits or not. Other than those two, Vega is pretty tough I think. He can counter Rekka Ken with crouching MP. Daigo: Gotcha. How are the charge projectile characters, Chun-Li, Guile, Dee-Jay, etc.? Mago: I think Fei-Long may have an advantage over Guile. It’s a sizable advantage in my opinion. As for the other characters I’m not really sure. Daigo: The changes to the frame data on a blocked Sonic Boom and nerfing its charge time a little bit was fatal. It’s a lot easier to just walk forward and block all of his projectiles to get closer. So you really need to use his backfist now. Mago: Yeah it has gotten tough for Guile now. Once he loses his charge, it’s so much easier to get in close on him. Speaking of charge, I think Bison is quite strong too. Daigo: I don’t think he’s that strong. Mago: Are you serious? Balrog, Bison, Honda and Blanka all piss me off as a Fei player, really.
