Michael died in the season 4 finale, the reason he couldn't die before was because he had work to do for the island (ie Blow up the freighter) He did that and he died

Then he was left as one of the whispers on the island because he'd killed Ana Lucia and Libby and wasn't allowed to move onto the afterlife
