Fernando Torres says Spain's defeat to France in the 2006 World Cup finals inspired them to transform their fortunes.
Underachievement on the international stage looked set to continue for Luis Aragones' team as they were sent tumbling out at the round of 16 in Germany four years ago.
A Zinedine Zidane inspired France coasted to a 3-1 victory that night, but Spain were to come back stronger two years later.
Torres scored the winner to crown his team European champions in 2008, ending decades of disappointment on the biggest stage.
And the Liverpool striker says the loss to France was the major turning point in becoming one of the best sides in the world.
Superior level
Spain are being hotly tipped to build on their European glory by winning the World Cup in South Africa, and should such expectations be fulfilled, Torres will be indebted to the pain of the loss in Hannover.
"In the 2006 World Cup in Germany, France taught us a big lesson," he said in the News of the World. "Without deserving it, back in Spain we gave ourselves the title of favourites for that match. We saw France as a beaten team even though they should have been favourites.
"They had players of a superior level, but because Zidane was close to retirement and they hadn't played well in group games we thought we would get through. In that match they showed us why there were better than us.
"They had the experience of winning titles and knew what big competition was all about. They were not afraid of being in the last 16. They didn't feel the pressure. They played their game the way they knew how and they were all over us.
"They had been playing together a long time and despite all the criticism they won when they needed to, just like all great teams. From that moment on we began to build a block, a style, an identity.
"Thanks to Aragones and despite all the criticism which rained down on us, that was the turning point.
"The more the manager was criticised, the more we were with him. And from then on, we were as one - the players and the coach. We went on to win everything through the Euros."
Torres said anticipation of his team's success could prove to be their undoing in this summer's competition, with pressure on Vicente del Bosque's side likely to be higher given their success of two years previous.
The Spaniards' passage into the knockout stages appears to be a favourable one, with Honduras, Chile and Switzerland standing between them in Group H.
Biggest enemy
Spain's turnaround was derailed in last year's Confederations Cup when the USA inflicted a 2-0 semi-final defeat and Torres says the humbling has helped improve his team and provided a timely reminder of the dangers of being complacent.
He added: "The biggest enemy for us is off the field without a doubt. Besides that match against France there was another important game. It was the one last year against the USA in the Confederations Cup and we lost that game 2-0.
"Now we are a team that knows how to win just like France in 2006, but we also know what it is to lose to an inferior team. We respect our rivals because humility is one of the forces of this Spain team.
"But it's good to be aware that defeat can happen. Our biggest enemy is being too relaxed. We are our own biggest enemy."

Spain are a hype team,
Im sorry but I do not rate them
good on paper but do not perform well in world cups
not on the levels of the likes of Italy/germany/brazil/argentina who are constant performers
