right...i wanna run 4 or 5 external hard drives on the same computerbut i dont want to use USB or Firewire, i wanna use eSATA coz i need faster speedsnow the next bitill need to run them all in a RAID-0 or JBOD configuration (look up RAID on wikipedia if you dont know)coz i need to squeeze out every last ounce of data transfer speed outta themBUT, i dont want to run 5 different power cables for the hard drives, plus the computer, plus about 5 other devices i'll have on location, i wanna have the bus powered, either through USB or FIrewire, but dont wanna use them for transfering the data.can i use the USB or Firewire to power the drives then transfer the data through eSATA?i looked all over google.thankin you

NOin fact you would need a server sized tower to do what you want....ur best bet is a NAS configured to raid 0.....most of which run on pata and not sata...i just clocked u said esata which i've never heard of.....i'm slippin on my geeky stuff of late i must play catch up.....why do you want to use external drives aswell.....thats the most expensive way of doing things...

Why don't you build a server and be done with it......
coz i need it portableits to film directly off a camera onto a PC skipping HDV or DV compression that messes up the imageto do that i need to write at around 200mb/s to get the best qualityor around 125mb/s for lower qualityi cant build a whole server coz i need to move it around from place to place so it would be quite long to take a whole server around.eSATA is external SATA that has a theoritical write speed of 3GB/s but practically it gets around 50mb/s so if i use around 4 or 5 in a RAID-0 config it should increase the write speed because the bits are shared randomly across all drives

Can I suggest one thing?

  • Invest in a 1TB NAS or however big you can get these now.

As for the whole can I power 5 drives of USB or FIREWIRE.Answer is MAYBE.. But I wouldn't suggest it. Remember the old skool USB modem that was self powered. The reason they was so sh*t. Is because they required more power than what a PC can feed them.So go for my 1st point.I'll answer this better when I'm free from looking for a new Job. biggrin.gif[EDIT]Just seen the responses above me. So I don't know if my suggestion is vaiable. But have a look n eways.

Do you realise that what you want to do can basically only be portable in the back of a van....lolHave you seen the size of a HD rig.....but anyway i reckon the best thing you can do is thisBuy a nas or a Gigabit Nas enclosure and put 5 750GB Hard drives in it.configure that to Raid0 - if you use cat 7 network cable and your pc has a gigabyte (sp) network card in it you should have no problem with transfer speeds and it should be about as portable as you're gonna get...Hope this helps....I've drawn this solution out of my head and i'm tired so i'm not sure of the practicalities...
