Main problem with Eastenders IMO is the characters are either all linked (family or past relationships) or just episode fillers who aren't ever gonna be subject to any even semi-major story lines.

You have the Brannings the Mitchell's and Bianca's lot. Apart from that where are the storylines gonna come from. Load of nothing characters who nobody really cares about due to them getting no build up or attention due to the aforementioned families. If Masood had gone off with the young girl nobody would've cared or missed them. Denise Patrick and Kim are filling a racial equality quota, Fatboy and Poppy is just meh. Alfie Kat and Roxy, Does anybody really care?

Who's left? They've let it slip over time but were in denial due to the television awards somehow finding its way to them every year despite Corrie being miles better.

I'm still trying to think of any other character.
