But they didn't ask to see the blood on the window, McDonald said. "Nobody ever checked it out," she said. "I was really mad because I knew my daughter was gone. I feel as though they should have checked that out." A few days later, neighbors searching for her found her body in the basement of a vacant rowhouse next door to her own. Jasmine had been raped and stabbed in the throat. She was wearing only her shirt, which was pulled over her head. The neighbors found her body by following the trail of blood in the backyard to the abandoned rowhouse. Had police looked at the blood, they could have found her earlier. "Everybody loved my baby. I know the kids are missing her," Charlene said. Police arrested Jasmine's mother's ex-boyfriend, Peter Cook. Charlene McDonald said Cook, her boyfriend of 12 years with whom she has two children, had argued with her about their failed relationship a day before her daughter disappeared. McDonald also testified that Cook broke her nose and broke into her home, prompting her to get a court order to keep him away from her. . DNA evidence linked him to the crime scene. As of April 2004, he is awaiting trial. Jasmine was an eighth-grader and straight-A student at Sulzberger Middle School at the time of her death.
