The Summer Transfer Thread

Recommended Posts

Half of those luxuries were a direct result of Rafa's influence.Carragher was a bit part right back, Benitez was the one who converted him to a CB.Gerrard has never scored over 10 goals a season with any manager other than Benitez.Torres had questions marks over his goal scoring abilities prior to arriving at Liverpool, Benitez turned him into a goal machine in a way not even Del Bosque could and he's now a shadow of his former self.Alonso was available to Real for £13 million prior to joining us but they weren't prepared to pay that. 4 seasons under Benitez later they paid £30 million.Arbeloa was a nobody when we signed him, a few seasons under Benitez later he's a European and World Cup winner with Spain.Reina was bought for £6 million pounds, we'd get £25 million for him easily if we were to sell him today. But I suppose Hughes who hardly spent anything at Man City :D is a better option.

It's not all about that though, is it? We need someone who can utilise what we've got. We've a class act in Ireland sitting in the stands earning 60k a week - who only wants to play for Hughes. We've Dunne and Warnock, if he could get those pair playing near their best it'd save us £15m in the market.Look at our better forward players: Downing, Gabby, Bent - all confidence players. Benitez's main criticism is he's a disciplinarian and a bit distant from his players. Benty could cost us £22m (£2m was on him getting 10 before end of season and he didn't get it) and is on 60k a week for four more years, we have to get the best out of him.Two of our rising stars: Delph and Albrighton - quality prospects. But they're not Benitez players, they're not controlled or tactically intelligent. Their attributes are in other areas and they're a bit reckless and positionally naive at times. Rafa may aid them, but a differing style of play may suit them better.I'm just looking at what we have (and we do have a lot of quality) and who'd get us back up in the top 6 soonest. We definitely need to move from MON's prehistoric methods - but we can't change too much too son, as Houllier found out.

OK Your Gerrard point was a good one, but didn't he train Gerrard when he was in his "prime" years, you'd expect a return of goals like he did.Fernando Torres scored 84 in 214 as a teenager playing the lone role and being made captain at the age of 19, his goal scoring credentials couldn't have been questioned. The current spine of the Manchester City team is down to Mark HughesKompany, Toure, De Jong, Barry and Tevez lets not forget Shay Given was one of the best keepers in the premiership under his tenor.

what do you think he did with us, came in and made wholesale changes? If he takes over the first thing you will realise is that he's very good at setting out a gradual plan that entails getting the best out of what he's got but being ruthless enough to get in a better replacement when the opportunity arises.DudekBiscanCisseTraoreBarosMellorSmicerAll players that at one point or another put in performances under Benitez in games that had you questioning wtf they'd been playing at for years prior. With us he had little money to change the shape of the squad but if you look at what he inherited and what he left it's truly remarkable he's not held in higher regard. Him being cold towards players is something that players who've played under him have scoffed at, Gerrard said he puts your game under scrutiny rather than heaping praise upon you but it's all geared towards making you a better player. I think it was Masch who came out and said Benitez being cold was a lie as he regularly asked about his kids etc. With Benitez it's all about your attitude, if you have a positive attitude and work hard he will repay you with his confidence and support.Crouch went for 18 games without scoring but he kept playing him and we saw the result. Lucas was getting booed but he kept playing him and we saw the result. Pennant was considered a no go but Benitez supported and had him playing well (until he thought it made sense to walk around Liverpool at every international break with a bottle of JD).Bent scores goals now but under Benitez I reckon he'd score even more. People used to say Torres scores so many 'cheap' goals where he nicks it off defenders high up the pitch but they didn't seem to notice how regularly he did it. Eto'o also said that Benitez's system is good for strikers because you defend much higher up the field so you receive the ball in positions and circumstances when the opposition aren't settled defensively.People talk about our youth system and Benitez but actually have no idea. When he arrived we had 4-5 players representing their national teams, when he left it was over 20. The simple fact was that our youth setup had been producing tosh for ages with the odd exception so we simply didn't have anyone worthy of first team football coming through. If he felt you were good enough he played you.Martin KellyJay SpearingStephen DarbyJack RobinsonAll local lads who made their debuts under Benitez, 2 of those in the Champions League of all places. Our youth team and reserves are now run by Rodolfo Borrell who is partly responsible for the current crop of Barcelona players who've graduated from the youth system, Benitez was responsible for that.He has his flaws but he's fully aware of them and has already suggested that in his second stint in England he'll be doing certain things differently, the next club he goes to in England will benefit from his experience at Liverpool in this respect. If you are looking for somebody to make a serious mark on your club and leave a legacy it isn't even a question of who's more suitable between Benitez and Hughes, it just pisses me off that he didn't get to finish off what he started at Liverpool.
