All good things (and sometimes really great things) must come to and end, and that includes AMC’s drama series Breaking Bad. Word is in on the fate of the show. Fans can expect to find the series where it’s always been as it’s been picked up for one final season.Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston as Walter White, a high school science teacher who, when faced with a terminal cancer diagnosis and not much in the bank, decides to provide for his family by making and selling crystal meth. Over the course of the first four seasons, we've seen him go from being a regular guy, to a man on the edge who's willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants and protect his own. According to The Hollywood Reporter, after “tense talks” between AMC and Sony over the fate of the show, including Sony possibly moving Breaking Bad to some other channel, the verdict is in and BB will remain at AMC. The network, which has a reputation for outstanding drama series, and lately, budget conflicts with its series, has given Breaking Bad a fifth season order consisting of 16 episodes. According to the Reporter, this will be the last season for the series.
Maybe this is just extreme optimism talking, but I love this news and not because I don’t love Breaking Bad. It’s one of the best shows on television right now and it’s for that reason that I’m glad the show has a defined end-point set. Each season, the writers have pushed Walter White further and further to the edge, setting new boundaries and crossing them. There has to be a breaking point sooner or later (no pun intended) . Knowing that Season 5 will be the last will give series creator Vince Gilligan an opportunity to complete the story. Ideally, sixteen episodes will be enough time to give the series the fantastic ending it deserves.
The other bright side to this is that, knowing that Season 5 will be the last season, Gilligan can plan accordingly rather than having to write the show in a way that will allow it to continue, should it get picked up for another season, but will also wrap things up, should it be cancelled. They know it's ending and whatever story is left can hopefully be told in the remaining episodes.
