I will be surprised if you can last the full 3 years. Most people I know from Preston love the the big cities (Birmingham, Leeds, London). They even prefer Newcastle and Bristol! The one's that leave Preston for a "big" city don't return .Good luck!

living away from home, it fine as long as u dont run outta money. I go derby uni which is down the road from notts, nottingham's a decent city i was gonna move there and communte to derby but it seemed like a long ting. Moving into a bad house this year 5 bedrooms en suite nicely furnished, my house last year was a sh*t hole and i fell out with the people i lived with so it wasnt a good look.

Make sure you let them know you won't stand for sh*t. ANd get prepared to swipe some of their goods, becuase they will do it for you. It can be alright, or it can be sh*t.My Halls was alright, although I think I was one of the 15 black students in that entire Halls. And I had to share a shower and toilet which I hated. The amount of times I was goign to get into something with the third year, and then man would try and bred me later. Almost made me feel bad.But hope your halls ain't got security so you can't get any grief about who your bringing in at any time. Certain halls like the en-suites had security guards making people sign people in and they had a set limit of how many you can bring in.Oh yeah, pray you have clean housemates, because they can put you off cooking if they were raised like they live in a barn.

It's good, if it is your first year of uni you can pretty much afford to get drunk every day. That year for me was a massive chill, sit back and relax year. You need to work though if you are paying for your housing out of your student loan and receive very little/no financial support from family.Live out, it will be good... Socialise, drink, party.... The first year is the only year you can fully live the student life so take the opportunity while you can.

how is it living off, say hypothetically, £300 a month?
Including the rent?3 bill a month (excluding housing) is easily manageable. You might find it difficult if you got a girlfriend.
