I see 'arry been watching his scouting videos again...51AMfHeIvjL._SS500_.jpgTottenham have set their sights on former Arsenal midfielder Julio Baptista.Brazilian Baptista has just finished his second season at Roma but he struggled for goals last term, hitting the target just three times.Baptista spent the 2006-07 season on loan at Arsenal - scoring a double against Spurs in the League Cup - and, according to Italian daily Corriere dello Sport, Harry Redknapp is interested in taking him back to north London.ArsenalBaptista_468x398.jpg'The Beast' would cost Redknapp around £4million but the Spurs boss is likely to face competition from former England manager Steve McClaren, now in charge of Wolfsburg.Baptista, 28, has almost 50 international caps and is with the Brazil squad at the World Cup in South Africa.

Tottenham have had an offer of 35 million euros (£28.5 million) accepted for in-demand Palermo pair Edison Cavani and Simon Kjaer.Spurs are currently looking to strengthen their squad for a first ever Champions League campaign and the Italian club’s president has confirmed they have received a sensational offer from Harry Redknapp.Danish centre half Kjaer has been heavily linked with Manchester United, in the wake of Nemanja Vidic’s possible transfer to Real Madrid, and Cavani to Man City so for Spurs to pull it off would be somewhat of a coup.Maurizio Zamparini told Sky Italia: “Tottenham have bid €35m, an offer we cannot refuse, seeing as the two players have both said they want to leave.”

Spurs have denied claims they have bid €35million (£28m) for Palermo duo Simon Kjaer and Edinson Cavani.Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini has claimed the Premier League outfit has made a big-money move for the highly-rated pair. But the London club have come out to deny the claim regarding Denmark centre-half Kjaer and Uruguay forward Cavani, who have both played well at the World Cup.A spokesman for Tottenham said: "Palermo's claims are inaccurate. We have not bid for these players."Zamparini had earlier claimed Spurs have tabled an offer for the pair which was too good to turn down.

RARELY has the possible arrival of an international playmaker been greeted with such a lukewarm reception among Tottenham fans.Ossie Ardiles, Glenn Hoddle, Gazza, David Ginola, Luka Modric. Spurs have always attracted these flair players, and the supporters have always loved them. Now Harry Redknapp is closing in on the signature of Joe Cole, a classic attacking midfielder who was born with No10 on his back - and an England international to boot. However, the chase for the 28-year-old is being met with an underwhelming mixture of surprise and consternation among supporters. Why do Spurs need him? Where would he play?Fear not. Once again, it appears that Harry Redknapp knows what he is doing. It's all about the Champions League and it's all about where England went wrong in South Africa.Tottenham fans will doubtless be relieved that Redknapp will not be getting the England job any time soon, but the 63-year-old retains a keen interest in the national team.He knows why their World Cup campaign was such a disaster, and he is determined that his Spurs side will not make the same mistakes when they embark on their Champions League adventure."I think that rigid 4-4-2 formation is the problem when you go in to play teams who can keep the ball," says Redknapp."When we (England) play 4-4-2 against better teams, they have the extra man in midfield. If they're comfortable on the ball you get outplayed and you get outnumbered. I felt we were too open in the way we wanted to play."We had two attacking full-backs, we're looking to play with two wide men and we've got two midfield players - one of them [Lampard] wants to run forward and is a fantastic goal scorer."There was a massive area in the middle of the park where we didn't get control of the ball. Look at the other sides. Take Germany - they played with [Mesut] Ozil in the hole behind the striker, two midfield players, and they popped it around. We couldn't get near them. Algeria outplayed us as well."I really felt we were naïve in the way we played, and I think the players felt the same way. I spoke to a few of the lads who were in the squad and they weren't really happy with the system."They always had that feeling that they were going to get outplayed and out-numbered in the middle of the park."Chelsea and Arsenal didn't go into Europe playing that way. Liverpool don't go away from home in Europe and play this way. We were playing a very open game that really wasn't suited to getting the results that we needed."I think you can get away with4-4-2 in the Premier League. Most teams are playing open, but in the World Cup, in European games, and certainly away from home in Europe... I think we're going to have to look at it [at Tottenham]."Given that Redknapp is virtually the poster boy for the 4-4-2 formation, the manager's comments are certainly interesting - and it seems that Spurs will be learning a new system in pre-season in preparation for the Champions League."We're not going to go and play with two out wide men and two up front and leave ourselves wide open in midfield," the manager went on."We're going to have to be careful, and if we're going to get control of the game we're going to have to overload the midfield. That's where games are won and lost in Europe."When you go into Europe the pace is always slower [than in England]. The teams pop it around you and they'll open you up. They'll get control of the ball and you're in trouble."It appears that Tottenham will make their Champions League debut playing 4-5-1, certainly away from home anyway - new tactics for a new competition. So, back to the original question. How would Cole fit in?"I think you'd either play him in behind, like the boy [Ozil] plays for Germany. He could play that position off a striker and be free - or I even think he could play in the middle of the park in whatever system."If you play with two up front you could play with a diamond. He could play in behind. I think Joe's strong enough, he's a lot stronger than people realise. He can run all day, he plays with great enthusiasm and skill, I think he's got everything."Of course, Spurs fans could justifiably claim that there are already players in the squad who could play this 'Cole role' behind the striker, but Redknapp clearly disagrees.Luka Modric is the obvious candidate but goals are not his forte and, given the importance of possession in the Champions League, he may be preferred in central midfield to the careless Wilson Palacios, alongside Tom Huddlestone.Niko Kranjcar would be a better bet - he scored eight last season - but he may be handed his favourite role, coming in off the left flank to link up with Modric and the No10, giving Spurs a wealth of technical players in midfield.David Bentley then? Spurs can afford someone better these days. Someone new. Someone with Champions League experience. Someone who has stated their desire to play a central role - literally - in big games. Someone like Joe Cole.
if we do get cole i just dont want it to hamper other players in the squad... as long as hes an addition and not a has to play every game player.tbh if niko / modric / gio can all play in the hole, and i still think niko can d everything joe cole can, and gio has the potential to do so...with our current team id play if we were going for 4-5-1Option 1------------------- Modric - Hudd ------------------- Lennon/Bentley ----- GDS ----- Niko/Bale - ------------------- New Striker ---------------------Option 2----------- Palacios/Sandro ---------------------- Hudd --- Modric -------------- Lennon/GDS ----------- Niko/Bale - --------------- New Striker ---------------
