What are your definitions of CLASSIC Hip-Hop albums?

I frequent the US HH sites alot and one recurring thread genre is the '<insert album> is a classic son!''...I mean, its not only until recently I've come up with what I consider a classic...The quality of the songs obviosuly, lyrical quality, recurrent theme throughout the album, longevity but for me its the EFFECT of the album which is the most important...E.g., how it has affected HH in its current state, how many new fans its made for itself etc...Discuss...

y cant evryone jus listen to music and enjoy it instead of doin the politics ting
*whispers*shhh! we gotta save the hip hop thread! But yea..To me a classic album is one that has STAYING power, generally one that is ahed of it's time...something that changes a Genre, Like Infamous..Illmatic...Road To Riches, Only Built For Cuban Linx Straight outta Compton, Boy In Da CornerAll of those albums, birthed/helped birth new styles, they set the trend, then others after them followed it...and if they didnt SET it, they defined it.Nowadays, a lotta people will hear a track that is good..or ok, and say like "yeh this is classic sh*t" no...just because a track ISNT awful, it doesnt make it a classic, and you can rarely tell a classic from listening to something once or twice.Though I wouldnt say all albums that birth a new style or define it are classics, for example...Nelly? or one of them other awful southern artists that started the Snap/crunk music, which i guess would be Lil John n the Eastside Boyz...nothing they do will ever be classic in my eyes cuz no matter ho wmany people they put on...to me the music is still horrendous biggrin.gif As i said...staying power, if you can make a track now, and in 15..or how ever many years it is still bump-able, then you deserve major credit.....Just my two cents

A classic album is one that came out in 1999 and still gets bumped in 2007. An album that goes platinum without much promotion. B.G - Chopper City In The Ghetto ...the best hip hop album ever...

These are the ones I've heard and the bold ones are ones that I totally agree with.Them albums cant be f*cked with. The Fix and Death Certificate epitomise the word Classic! They are my two examples
