Two tier Prem League? Rangers and Celtic?

The possibility of Celtic and Rangers joining a two-tier English Premier League will be discussed in June at the league's Annual General Meeting.Chairmen from England's top-flight met on Thursday in London and spoke in general terms about league reform. However, Bolton chairman Phil Gartside's idea of admitting the two Scottish clubs was not raised.European football's governing body Uefa say they would not oppose the Old Firm joining an English Premier League.Gartside is preparing a plan to include both teams in a two-tier Premier League of 18 teams each. The idea would have to overcome a number of obstacles if it was to come to fruition, and Uefa has consistently said that teams will not be allowed to play in leagues outside their own country. But Uefa's director of communications William Gaillard told BBC Scotland on Monday the matter would be something to be decided between the leagues and associations involved. Those bodies would be the Premier League, the Football Association, the Scottish Premier League, the Scottish Football Association and the Football League in England.Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are likely to be against the plan as it would reduce their income. Others such as Aston Villa, Tottenham and Everton, who may consider it unlikely they would ever drop out of a 20-team Premier League, may also have misgivings.Mid-table clubs might also struggle to cope with a drop in television money as the cash is spread more widely. In theory, any addition of the Old Firm to an English league could provide a stiffer test for Scotland's top two clubs and generate more enthusiasm from broadcasters and fans. That would make up some of the money each club would lose if the Premier League is expanded from 20 to 36 clubs. At the moment, teams relegated to the Championship are given £11.5m a year for two years because of the lost television income when they drop out of the top flight and are not promoted back into it.Gartside's plan, which will need the approval of 14 out of 20 Premier League chairmen, would offer more financial stability to teams in the lower half of the Premier League, who would then be able to plan for the future with greater certainty.

Won't happen because:1) It will kill Scottish football. If Rangers and Celtic can join why not Hearts and Aberdeen?2) Although they're both sh*t sides currently once they get up to speed they will dominate. We would essentially be letting two of the biggest clubs in Europe into the Premier League. Every club in the country bar United, Liverpool and possibly Arsenal would eventually find it alot harder to progress and the "big 4" would soon become a 'big 6'.3) There is no way the football league will allow only 1 relegation. Also it's funny because Bolton came up through the play-offs so in Gartsides view they wouldn't be up anymore.4) I think the only clubs who will want this to come in will be the Bolton's/Wigan's/Boro's/Hull's/whichever dross club is languishing just above the relegation zone and wants the security of less chance of relegation and to be able to fill their ground an extra 2 games a season. No way will the 'big 4', ourselves, Everton, Spurs, Citeh, Newcastle (if they're still here) or any club with any ambition of bridging the gap want this to happen.I could see them being allowed into the FA Cup though... A merger of the Scottish and FA Cup could be interesting...

f*ck celtic and rangers, not prem standard.
With the extra revenue we'd get from playing down there, we would be.
More than that, both of you within 5 seasons would be pushing for major honours with ease.

Strong post. C/S most of it.I disagree with point 1) though, you can't really compare the support, stature & prestige of Celtic & Rangers with any other Scottish clubs. And to merge the Scottish & FA Cups would be a waste of time IMO, noone would care about it.

At first they would be mid table teams but people are seriously unaware if they think Celtic and Rangers wouldnt start to be very successfull within a few years in the premtheir support base is second to only Man U and Liverpool, and with all the extra money from the prem and more importantly the ability to attract big name players beacuse they would be in the prem they would soon be up therehope they dont get in though cos they both have terrible fansdont want all that sectarian sh*t in the prem, its pathetic

I suggest if the F.A. Scottish F.A. want to help out scottish football, they attempt to do something to improve the revenue upon which the clubs rely, not sure how they would do this, but basically the scottish league is in difficulty, financially and otherwise, and removing celtic and rangers from the equation till not help anyone other than those two clubs.
