Juventus durector general Bepper Marotta has confirmed that the club are willing to listen to offers for Brazil World Cup villain Felipe Melo.Melo struggled to make an impact in his first season with the Bianconeri, after arriving from Fiorentina with an impressive reputation in a £22 million deal last summer. He was voted the worst player in Serie A by listeners of Rai Radio 2, who handed him the the 2009 Bidone d'Oro (Golden Bin) award last December. And he did little to enhance his reputation at the World Cup, after scoring an own goal and getting sent off in his side's quarter-final defeat to Netherlands for stamping on Arjen Robben. And while Marotta believes that Juventus must help Melo recover from his dismal World Cup experience, he admits the club would consider selling the Brazil midfielder."It is only right that Juventus look after Felipe Melo, as he is owned by the club and therefore one of our assets," Marotta told Mediaset Premium."Having said that, the same applies to him as all the other players when it comes to deciding what is in our and his interest. We are therefore carefully evaluating the situation and will listen to any offers that come in."

A report earlier this week had suggested that German champions Bayern Munich were preparing an offer for Ajax defender Gregory van der Wiel and the Dutch international now indeed appears to be on his way to the Bundesliga giants.Van der Wiel has been in impressive form at the 2010 World Cup and is likely to start for Oranje in Sunday's final against Spain as he returns from suspension. The full-back's impressive performances have not gone unnoticed elsewhere and several European giants are reportedly interested in signing the defender.Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Inter, Arsenal and Manchester City have all been linked with Van der Wiel, but Bayern Munich appear to be sitting in pole position to sign the Dutch ace.According to a report in Voetbal International, the Bavarian powerhouse have already reached an agreement with Ajax about the transfer of Van der Wiel. The Amsterdam side have apparently accepted a £14.2 million (€17m) offer from Bayern, with a potential £2.5m (€3m) more in variables depending on any domestic and European trophies won.Bayern Munich have yet to agree personal terms with Van der Wiel, with the defender likely to make a decision about his future after the World Cup final.

This has to be a wind-up surely...
Ampher Apidi, a local sports commentator, was recently in South Africa for the World Cup. He met Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, and discussed with him several issues on football development.APIDI: Thank you for giving me this opportunity to have a word with you Sir.WENGER: You are welcome. I would prefer you call me Arsene, not Sir because I’m a professor, not Sir. (Referring to Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson).APIDI: What is your general assessment of how South Africa has hosted the 2010 Fifa World Cup so far?WENGER: South Africa has done a great job and exceeded expectations. The people are so passionate about the game, stadiums are full, the infrastructure is fantastic and the general organisation is marvelous.APIDI: Let us talk about the World Cup now. How would you describe the team performances starting with France, your home nation?WENGER: Well, I’m not supposed to talk about the national team because you all know what happened, but I think there was a problem between the manager and the players. This affected the team spirit on and off the pitch.APIDI: What about England?WENGER: They had a good manager, but there was no teamwork. The team was not united, with the captaincy changing hands so many times before the World Cup. They also never had a plan B.APIDI: What do you mean with plan B?WENGER: It was clearly evident the same team that started went on to play all the matches, apart from just one change in attack. You need to have players for different situations and challenges.APIDI: Was leaving Theo Walcott out of the squad a mistake?WENGER: Yes, it was a big mistake. Walcott is a player who can change a game upside down in the second-half in your favour. He has speed and can cause a lot of problems for the opponents.APIDI: What is your take on the teams still surviving in the tournament and who do you think will win the World Cup?WENGER: All the remaining teams have been carried by their midfield, not strikers. Germany have a very good midfield of (Mesut) Ozil, Bastian (Schwensteiger) and (Sami) Khedira. Spain have Inniesta (Andreas), Xavi (Alonso) and Cesc Fabregas. Holland have Arjen Robben and (Wesley) Sneidjer, (Mark) van Bomel. The best midfield will win the World Cup.APIDI: Any good players you have seen in the tournament?WENGER: Yes, Ozil (Germany) and Giovanni Dos Santos of Mexico.APIDI: That takes me to your home; Arsenal.WENGER: Ah yes, I was waiting for that all this time.APIDI: Are we likely to see the two (Ozil and Dos Santos) at Arsenal?WENGER: You can only field 11 players at a time, but we will wait and see.APIDI: Is Cesc Fabregas leaving Arsenal?WENGER: I do not see him leaving soon.APIDI: Any players likely to leave?WENGER: Yes, Gallas (William) could be on his way out but we will still wait and see.APIDI: Anyone coming in?WENGER: Yes. Marouane Chamakh is already in and a defender is on the way too. You will know after the World Cup who will be coming.APIDI: Goalkeeping let you down last season, anybody going or coming?WENGER: Manuel Almunia Rivero is a talented goalkeeper. In training, he is superb, the only problem is that he gets nervous on big matches, thereby making silly mistakes. After the World Cup, we will be making an announcement on goalkeeping.APIDI: Are we likely to see an invincible team again bearing in mind that you have gone a couple of seasons without a trophy?WENGER: This could be the season that we start getting trophies. Another invincible team is seen coming if not this season.APIDI: Why do you tend to like blacks?WENGER: I look at quality, not colour.APIDI: Your take on African teams in the World Cup?WENGER: There are very good and talented players in Africa. We need to have youth academies because that is the only way to develop the game. Give the youth a chance and have faith in them, remain principled and be patient.APIDI: What do you make of Ghana’s striker Asamoah Gyan’s missed penalty in their quarter-final match against Uruguay?WENGER: He had the pressure of the entire African continent on his feet. He needed to be calm and a little patient. I always tell my players to pick their points and hit the ball hard when taking penalties. I would rather the goalkeeper saves but not hitting the crossbar. It means you were accurate and on target.APIDI: Have you heard of Kenya?WENGER: Yes. Very good athletes and recently a Kenyan player (McDonald Mariga) was signed by Inter Milan and played in the Champions League.APIDI: Would you like to come to Kenya?WENGER: Yes. With my family for holiday.APIDI: A Kenyan Arsenal fan committed suicide when the team lost to Manchester United. What message would you have for Kenyan Arsenal fans?WENGER: What? (shocked) My condolences. To Arsenal fans, keep on supporting Arsenal, another invincible team is on the way. And please, do not commit suicide.

Skysports.com understands Arsenal are ready to turn their attentions to Slovenia star Samir Handanovic as they look to bring in a new goalkeeper.Wenger has made recruiting a shot-stopper one of his top priorities this summer as he looks to solve the somewhat problematic position at the Emirates. The Gunners have been linked with a host of keepers and it appears Udinese custodian Handanovic is at the top of Wenger's wanted list after impressing the Frenchman at the World Cup, especially in the narrow defeat to England.Handanovic is regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe having impressed for club and country in recent years.Arsenal have seen a bid for Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer rejected and the Gunners could now switch their focus to Handanovic as an alternative, with the player seen as a long-term option for the club as he is only 25-years-old.Udinese are reluctant to lose Handanovic, but they would find it hard to turn down a sizeable offer for the player.

Stuttgart are yet to receive any offers for Germany internationals Sami Khedira and Serdar Tasci, according to director of sport Jochen Schneider. Both players have been linked with moves to various clubs around Europe, with midfielder Khedira an apparent target of Chelsea as a replacement for Bayer Leverkusen-bound Michael Ballack, while defender Tasci has reportedly attracted interest from Arsenal.Khedira, who has one-year remaining on his Stuttgart contract, has made an impact for Germany at the World Cup this summer, playing a key role at the heart of midfield and helping his side to the semi-finals.Spanish newspaper AS claimed on Wednesday that Real Madrid are also keen on securing the 23-year-old's services for a reported £12million, but Schneider is adamant no enquiries have been made."We have received nothing for either Sami Khedira or Serdar Tasci," Schneider told kicker-Sportmagazin."No enquiries, no bids, no facsimile or similar. We are aware of those daily rumours, but this is why we do not really treat this with much attention."We are keen on keeping both players part of VfB Stuttgart."

According to a report this morning, the 33 year-old Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia is set to move back to Spain with Atletico Madrid after the transfer of Mark Schwarzer is finalised this week. There has been contradictory reports about the Fulham goalkeeper this week, with some papers saying that Fulham have rejected Arsenal’s offers, and others saying that the Australian has passed a second medical and will be announced as a Gunner this week. But the People are certain that the deal will be confirmed this week, and that Almunia is not happy that he is due to be relegated to the bench so will jump at the chance to join Atletico Madrid in a cut-price deal.I am sure that Wenger would be pleased to get some of the money laid out for Schwarzer back so quickly, so I could see this being true. They go on to say that their financial troubles mean that Atletico will cash in on their Spanish U21 keeper David De Gea and replace him with Almunia on the cheap.Another interesting statement in the article is that Wenger may also offload Lukasz Fabianski before the transfer window closes…. :D

Germany playmaker Mesut Ozil on Sunday pledged his future to Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, despite attracting the attentions of Europe's top clubs at the World Cup.The 21-year-old was an integral part of the team which clinched its second successive third place spot at the finals, when it beat Uruguay 3-2 in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.European giants Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester United have all been reported to have expressed an interest in the attacking midfielder.Barcelona had apparently been prepared to let him stay at Werder till next year and offer two players to the German club if Ozil signed for them now.But Ozil says he will be staying put in Bremen until 2011 and will be playing in the Bundesliga when the new season starts on August 20."Bremen want me to fulfil the contract and so do I," he told German newspaper Bild on Sunday."I have always said that I want to fulfil my contract, that is important for me."European champions Spain - who beat Germany 1-0 in the semi-finals - take on the Netherlands - 3-2 victors over Uruguay - later on Sunday at Soccer City in Johannesburg.
