lol the way nuff man are coming tru and avoiding that question.

init wtf

ppl insecure about their degrees?

lol init

m12 too

don't get it

If I drop certain details it makes things bait. Don't want that life where certain people can be turning up at my work or doing covert research on me when I don't know who they are.

Especially as some of the stuff I say on here could potentially be flames for myself or some of my circle. Rather not broadcast it. People who know me irl off here know the deal. But if you don't I don't get any benefit from putting it out there.

BEng Mechanical Engineering

MSc Mechanical Engineering

This is the route that sometimes I wish I took

But I guess the grass is always greener...

At the time it was hard as most Engineering jobs aren't in London, but with a Mech Eng degree most of the people on my course are in investment Banking and for some reason they love Engineers.

anyone here doing IT? what the market like out der?

depends on the area you are trying to get into brah... Eg. Support, development, administration. In my sector (microsoft development) there is a shortage of skills. Which direction are you thinking of heading in?

well i have a bit a of a interest in web development, im going to start a lil free lance business over the summer holidays, and see how far i get with that

whats microsoft development about? like ur main roles

Microsoft development just means creating applications for windows machines, or websites that will run on windows servers. I specialise in web development but I do windows as well.

The Microsoft web stack is

asp.net and SQL server

Microsoft want new developers to flock to their technologies, hence you can get lots of free sh*t.

im actually using asp.net now, just before holidays i had to make a e-commerce website. found it easy making the website, but the codes for the shopping basket were f*ck*ng harrddd, also quite clued up on SQL, got 1st in databases last year

cud u send me a link about the new developers they are looking for?

wud actually luv to work for Microsoft, imagine having that on the CV

Yo

I don't actually work at Microsoft - I work at a software house that develops using Microsoft Technology. Have a look on cw jobs (http://www.cwjobs.co.uk/) for graduate stuff.

What year are you in now?

IB love engineers as quants guys because of the technicality of the maths involved.

It's mad as that slipped my mind, I was thinking along the lines of designing car engines etc.

some ppl wait until may/june of the year they're graduating to start taking post-uni career goals seriously

mainly med/engineering students can play like that.also, its just the software analysis/development aspect of engineering that IB like or requireIB isnt about calculus and complex maths...

Also disagree, a large degree of the trading of investment banking relies on underlying systems that the numbers people crunch in the basement.

Those people engineer trading strategies which are generally adhered to, doesn't mean traders need to understand it numerically, they tend not to anyway.

You used the word "Quants", which generally means (in IB terms) one thing. You saw IB and assumed anyone working in an IB was a quant. You obviously have seen a term on The Student Room and have started to use it here. Most quantitative financiers have PhDs of some maths related course, and it's very unlikely some graduate with a BSc/MEng will get a job as a quant. So stop talking sh*t.

Stop acting like you've ever been near an investment bank you black victim before I come down to Evangelou's gym and slap your fat lips.

dear captain plantagenet,

i made my statement based on the fact that i have a brother in IB and an uncle who's now retired and bredrin doing the same,

however unlike my brother and uncle i can say my bredrin is more of the number cruncher, having a degree in maths and develops software

they both work in investment banking but hes not the one making and closing deals, while my bro was recently involved in a major M&A.

If it were 'largely' about complex calculations and number crunching as you claim, my brother wouldn't be in it..certainly not last in it.

sure you need an interest/ passion in finance which already involves number crunching but understand what investment banking really is and the different facets of it before making blanket statements.P.s..... Pernell d*cktaker suck your mum in advance

You have basically repeated what I said.

I said the number people do the numbers, the traders trade, I never said all of IB is about mathematics, I said the quantitative aspects of it is.
