For anyone in their first or second year at uni definitely get a regular unpaid job in the field you want to go into.

After graduating it is quite simple now

I'm thankful for my parents I really am

But basically, besides the grad scheme malark or the internships I think now I'm going to look to jump straight into work, in one of a few industries relevant to my career path

Once I get working I'll move into a flat the family bought recently, clean it up (the last somalians really trashed the place) and start paying that mortgage off with my brother to ease the financial burden on my parents, it will still be in their name until I'm making larger amounts obviously but I'm more than happy to help, especially since it effectively puts me on the housing ladder from the get go.

Once that's paid and I'm ready to move on I'll simply let it out again, hopefully the gf has a council flat by then or something shes on the waiting list, so I'll move into hers and rake in some nice rent money

It was quite awhile ago but after graduating I went full time at my previous part time dead super market job for around 8 months. Then I went onto a career related job (bottom of the ladder sh*t). Although it was crappy doing full time at a supermarket for awhile it only made me more determined and driven to succeed.

It was tough but that was years and years ago and now i'm in my dream job so it can be done if you want it bad enough. You just have to be focused and willing to start at the bottom if need be. Too many people I knew were not willing to do that and see the bigger picture.

degree in law and economics, always wanted to be a lawyer, but one of my lectures noticed how i killed all my eco modules so recommend i take a year out to explore the finance/banking sector before i lock myself down, i took his advice.

took forever to get an internship, but after like 7 months got a 3 month internship with rbs group. Wasn't really for me and just served to consolidate my decision to be a lawyer

got a scholarship to do a masters in law, and here i am

start the lpc in september another year out (due to the mandatory two year wait for a training contract) then a training contract with a law firm after that

so i'll be 25/26 before i move out, but i'll be paided

Graduated, ended up doing something i dreamed of doing since i was a kid, then i came to the realisation it was a living nightmare

im now currently on course to creating my own destiny

p.s. University teaches you absolutely NOTHING about REAL LIFE, it's quite sad actually, i know people Masters who've been working retail for the best part of 2 years. terrible stuff.

My boy graduated last year, one year on and he's working in KFC and doing some voluntary work on the side

He said he uses one site to appy for graduate jobs and it says how many people have applied for each job on the website and they all have over 200 applicants, even for random jobs that you would think of as unpopular

depends on the area you are trying to get into brah... Eg. Support, development, administration. In my sector (microsoft development) there is a shortage of skills. Which direction are you thinking of heading in?

well i have a bit a of a interest in web development, im going to start a lil free lance business over the summer holidays, and see how far i get with that

Microsoft development just means creating applications for windows machines, or websites that will run on windows servers. I specialise in web development but I do windows as well.

The Microsoft web stack is

asp.net and SQL server

Microsoft want new developers to flock to their technologies, hence you can get lots of free sh*t.

Everyone saying that internships are good... take this with a pinch of salt. A lot of internships are pointless and are way of the employers getting free labour. Have a look at http://internsanonymous.co.uk/ for some blog posts about shyte internships. Lots of them involve making tea and being an office drone. And most of them are illegal. If you are being told to be in the office between set hours, they legally should be paying you minimum wage. My boy is getting ready to sue a company he did a 2 month internship with because of this.

Those at uni should look at doing an Industrial year in their 3rd year, and then doing their final year after that. That's what I did. Most uni's have an entire department for this stuff as they want to get their graduate employment numbers up. You can do them on any course, it doesn't have to be a science.

im actually using asp.net now, just before holidays i had to make a e-commerce website. found it easy making the website, but the codes for the shopping basket were f*ck*ng harrddd, also quite clued up on SQL, got 1st in databases last year

Working in Direct Tax atm, but might switch to audit for my 3 year training.

Moving into industry after 3 years, or getting an MBA in Finance from LSE/Imperial - Haven't decided.

If I successfully find an industrial post that allows me to build 'stacks on stacks', I'll put my MBA on the back burner.

Graduated right on the onset of the crunch credit.

I was lucky to get a temp job at one of my prospective companies I was applying for their grad scheme.

Got on that and finished working in a decent job slowing working my way up to Commercial manager.

I genuinely feel sorry for grads right about who don't have a confirmed job post graduation, it is a hard struggle, but with hard work and sometimes luck, it can work out.

Knowing what I know now, I probably would have spent my summers between my degrees getting experience.
