Spurs Fan furious -

Dear ................ Re: Premier League Match Officials I am writing to you to ask for an explanation on a number of points noted during today’s Chelsea v Spurs Premier League match at Stamford Bridge. Firstly let me say I am a Spurs Season Ticket holder of 35 years and this letter is in no way brought about by the result of today’s game, but by the fact that yet again I have watched a game that has been ruined by one of your officials (some might even say the league’s top official). Watching football (especially in London) is extremely expensive these days and due to the current economic climate I cannot afford to get to every game anymore and catch whatever games I don’t get to on Sky Sports and ESPN. Whether or not I go to game is not relevant here, but one thing all fans ask for when they watch a game is for both teams to play to their best, not try and cheat and for the game to be played in the right ‘spirit’, win, lose or draw. Ensuring fair play involves the match officials, the referee, his two assistants and the 4th official, who have a very difficult job (most fans would agree) but are also very well paid now for being ‘professional’, all we ask of them is to be consistent and fair (they are mostly neither). Why then do we still have officials that are seemingly ‘scared’ of giving big decisions (penalties and cards) to the ‘top four’ sides unless it is embarrassingly obvious. Let us take a number of examples from today’s game: 1) Carvalho scythes down Defoe on the edge of the penalty area in the first half in front of the referee and no free kick given. Why?? No idea maybe he did not see the incident he was 5 yards from.2) Keane bursts into the area ahead of Carvalho and has his leg clipped, a clear penalty to anyone watching (the game was evenly poised at 1-0 to Chelsea at the time) but no penalty and no yellow card for simulation, it had to be one or the other.3) A ball is crossed towards Crouch who is faced by Ashley Cole (there is over 1ft difference in height a complete mismatch) Cole turns away from the ball and faces Crouch and jumps straight at him to stop him, since when is this part of the rules? Another clear penalty, not according to Mr Webb it’s not.4) Every time Keane went to ground he got a hand waving gesture from Mr Webb to say get up no foul, yet every time Didier Drogba did his dying swan diving impersonation (3 times in the first half alone) he gets none of the same treatment from Mr Webb and in fact twice as Spurs were breaking up field we were pleaded with to put the ball out of play so that Drogba could be treated, in fact not once did any of these incidents involve the trainer entering the field of play and he was implored on one occasion by his captain to get up and get on with the game which he did, but not until he had disrupted 2 Spurs attacks. This surely is as bad as diving and is also a form of cheating (feigning injury), although I don’t suppose the league will look at these incidents.5) A free kick is taken by Chelsea and the Spurs left back raises his arms in the wall and deflects the ball over the bar with his arm from inside the area, surely a penalty. Not given (let me add this was at a time when it was 3-0 to Chelsea and has not affected the outcome of the game in the same way that a penalty to Spurs at 0-1 down could have altered the course of the game). As for Carvalho, on both occasions today in the immediate aftermath of the incidents involving him, performed his usual not guilty impersonation and protested his innocence, therefore pointing the finger at the attacker accusing him in effect of simulation, because if he protests his innocence and says he did not commit a foul but the attacker goes down, then he is accusing the attacker of simulation. He is therefore by the letter of the law, deceiving the officials and trying to cheat, again I am sure this won’t be looked at either. These are 5 separate cases from one game, officiated by supposedly our best referee. Mr Webb and Spurs have ‘history’ though. Cast your minds back to Old Trafford last season, Spurs are 2-0 up against Man Utd and although under pressure, were in no real danger, Carrick bursts into the box tries to go round Gomes who gets a fantastic hand on the ball and it goes out for a throw in. Carrick goes down and a penalty is awarded to the absolute shock of 78,000 fans and 22 players, not one of the Man Utd. players appealed for a penalty, in fact Evra went to take a throw-in. So why then are Spurs being punished by having this referee again? He is either scared to give decisions against the ‘top 4 sides’ or something altogether more sinister. I personally cannot think of any other explanation for him getting so many big decisions wrong if he such a good referee. I understand that he has had problems on the International stage too, making some rather high profile mistakes? I can’t say that I am surprised having now witnessed his shoddy handling of two very important high profile games. It almost seems that so long as no one manages to upset the cosy cartel at the top of the Premier League then all is right in the world. Well I am sorry many many fans across the country are becoming increasingly fed up of having to play against ’12 men’ in effect as it seems the ‘top four’ can do no wrong when faced by other teams. When in reality, these teams don’t need such help, they are good sides, but the number of what I can only describe at best as questionable decisions that they get wrong, time and time again is becoming ridiculous and quite frankly embarrassing. I don’t mind losing games to the better side, but when the officials decisions are so one sided, it ceases to become a fair contest and as such is no longer enjoyable. I have many friends involved in football, from Directors of Clubs to humble office workers, groundsmen, Commercial Directors and even a Football League Official and they are all concerned by this apparent bias towards these so called ‘top four’ clubs. If it is not dealt with now, it could end up in the death of football as we know and love it. As there will be no point playing these games in the knowledge that unless a decision is 150% nailed on, you are not going to get it, you will of course deny all of this but what other explanation can there be for such awful decision making from supposedly the best in the business? I could relate another dozen or more incidents involving Spurs and the ‘top four’, Mendes ‘goal’ at Old Trafford, Ronaldo’s blatant dive at White Hart Lane and even the referees chief Mr Riley when he let Ashley Cole off with one of the worst pieces of decent I have ever witnessed in a game at White Hart Lane, after Cole had been booked for a horific high and late challenge on Alan Hutton (possibly a red card on its own), Mr Riley called Cole to him but Cole stood his ground and then turned his back on Mr Riley and pointed to his name and refused to turn round, so Mr Riley ended up walking to him and walking round him to face him. If the referees showed more backbone they may get more respect. But what’s the point in going over old decisions, you will only think I am an embittered fan having a moan because my team lost. How wrong you would be for thinking this. I await your reply (and please don’t send one of your standard pre-printed ones like last time, I still have it and will speak to some journalists I know if you do and let them print the story with the letters, which will just go show how little you care about the fans). Yours sincerely

Webb is on the same level as that ref that we had for the WBA game last year.He is f*ck*ng sh*t and should be reffing in league 1 lololol @ him being the best ref in england.Guy couldn't even ref a CL match. I remember Messi got hacked down differently in the box and he goes and tells him to get up. Ref is a f*ck*ng joke and hates harry.Maybe if Harry didn't say " If he is our best, i'll hate to see our worst"I hope harry slews him again, Webb is a f*ck*ng disgrace to football. It seems as though all the "unlucky" decisions are always against us when it comes to this ref.I remember he f*cked over Newcastle last season as well
