MR. BROOKS…A BETTER TOMORROW IN STORES MARCH 3, 2009In early March 2009, one of the most talked about dancehall artists Mavado will unveil the second chapter of his stirring street narrative, Mr Brooks…A Better Tomorrow, on VP Records. Mavado — who was crowned “Best New Reggae Artist” at the 2008 MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards and by Rolling Stone Magazine (April 2008) — is making dancehall a big screen production. The talented singjay from Kingston, Jamaica’s toughest ghetto Cassava Piece, has crafted his strongest album yet — a bittersweet struggle over the dichotomies in his world — past vs. present, hope vs. despair, and freedom from strife. Following Mavado’s critically acclaimed debut Gangster For Life: The Symphony of David Brooks (July 2007), Mr Brooks…A Better Tomorrow is a true reflection of who Mavado (David Brooks) is today. This second installment of his latest hits and daring exploits are built on apocalyptic synthesizer progressions to which Mavado chats and sings simplistic yet profound lyrics with strong conviction and ease. His contagious hook and clever outlaw antics from the album’s first single “So Special” (produced by Linton “TJ” White) has already turned this #1 Jamaican smash in into a U.S. commercial radio hit remaining on Billboard’s Top 100 Hot R&B/Hip Hop Airplay and Song chart for over a month and peaking at #52. The chart toppers will not end here, Mavado pours out his heart and soul on every track from his new diary. While his community is plagued by violence and corruption, Mavado unites the ghetto youth on rally cry anthems like “Overcome” (produced by Stephen McGregor) & “Don’t Worry” (produced by Daseca) and gives thanks to Jah for all his good fortunes on “So Blessed” (produced by Stephen McGregor). And a Mavado album would not be complete without a steamy track like “In Di Car Back” (produced by Stephen McGregor), where sexual escapades and desires run rampant on this spicy melody. This “rising star with a battle-scarred singing voice” (New York Times) has created a breakthrough set for his 2009 release. With a string of massive underground hits running back to 2006, his international street credibility, collaborations with hip hop’s biggest names (Jay-Z, G-Unit, Foxy Brown, Wyclef, Lil Kim and Busta Rhymes), his first album Gangster For Life: The Symphony of David Brooks remaining in the Top 25 Billboard Reggae sales chart since its debut, and major scores & endorsement deals, Mavado has gone from obscurity to ghetto super stardom. Deemed the “Gully God” by fans and media, the controversy surrounding him has also ignited an enigmatic gangster façade. Part prophet, part superhero and part fugitive, Mavado is the voice of the streets and represents dancehall for the new generation. 44 “SO SPECIAL”MavadoPRODUCED BY TJFrom Unfinished Business (riddim)Dancehall’s “Gangster For Life” has been everywhere this year, from Grand Theft Auto IV to collabos with Jay-Z and G Unit. Just in case you were wondering why, he breaks it down over a reprise of Dave Kelly’s “Showtime” riddim. “I’m so special,” he points out. “That’s why me strapped with a .45 special.”

A dancehall vid and only Killa's dancing? The rest are just bubbling wtf? Club scene looks like some coch, Jamaican parties arent like that. And cameos. Surely they could have got Bolt or Powell in there.

On topic,

Mavado's brand new 'So Special' video was due to premier on BET's 106 & Park yesterday evening, but many viewers were left baffled as the video was never shown.Alliance Entertainment, Mavado's management team, has issued a press release this morning, outlining that BET's legal team had last minute objections to the video, particularly its "excessive display of alcohol" and "careless use of women as writhing set dressings!" Notably, Alliance Entertainment has outlined that when the video was first submitted to BET, they flagged several issues and it went through three different edits before final approval. Here's the main body of Alliance Entertainment's release: "We were as surprised as everyone at BET's decision not to follow through on their promise to premier the 'So Special' video on yesterday's 106 & Park. Despite 106 & Park's presenters hyping the premier for several days, including showing clips from the video, a last minute intervention by someone in the legal department prevented the video from airing. The anticipation was very high for the BET premier, and we weren't notified until late in the day that there was a last minute objection by one of the legals over there, who had a censorship issue. He objected to "excessive display of alcohol" and "careless use of women as writhing set dressings!" The video is now available to watch online so people can make up their own minds about that."The show's programmer had passed the video and had been running promos so she was livid at the decision. It's disappointing but all is not lost. If anything, this may help publicise the video even more. Mavado can't seem to step without some form of controversy!"
What a piss take. Excessive alcohol and what the women were wearing? I would understand truesay its a yuteman program but Pop Champagne can be voted for

Alliance bad boy 'David Mavado Brook' is being heralded by many as the new saviour of Dancehall, very ironic after years of vilification in the media and certain sectors of society, but its easy to see why.Currently breaking barriers for Dancehall music, Mavado is slowly entrenching himself in the fabric of North American popular culture. Recently another round of promotion in New York saw Mavado making an appearance at the MTV studios in Times Square, where he recorded an in-depth interview with Rahman Dukes for the station's flagship MTV News slot. From there it was on to the G-Unit offices, to record an interview for 50 Cent's wildly popular entertainment website thisis50.com. The videotaped interview will premiered on the site this Sunday and will be able available online for an entire week. With the release of his sophomore album 'Mr Brooks - A Better Tomorrow', on digital format via iTunes exclusively a week prior to the physical CD release, Mavado has once again broke new ground for Dancehall.Since iTune's inception almost six (6) years ago Bob Marley's timeless "Legend" album, voted the album of the 20th century, has been the number one (#1) selling album on the Reggae section of iTunes.Today that changed for the first time ever, as Mavado took the top spot with his 'Mr Brooks' album, released yesterday. With a hectic promotional schedule set for its physical release next week, including in-store signings and an appearance on HOT 97's Angie Martinez show, Mr Brooks certainly looks set to continue the huge strides he has made since bursting on to the scene three (3) years ago. The album is available for purchase via www.itunes.com .

Just finished listening to the album. It's hard but not as good as Symphony of David Brooks.I'm disappointed in the sense that they was no elements of surprises for example, I'm going through the album & finding myself skipping tracks because I've already heard them. If it was only 2 or 3 tracks then cool but 8? That was enough to feel slightly let down which in his defence, they isn't alot he can do about. Another thing that I was hoping for was knocking beats, dem up tempo beats that really tump in the club/whip which were so prolific in symphony of. but seemed lacking in this album except for say 'on the rocks', 'So blessed', 'So special' plus a few more others I can't remember right now. I loved the general sense of positivity in the album in contrast with his last offering, '...a better tomorrow' vibe defo rings out. It's a solid follow up album. It should do well.
