CHASING AFTER THE TOP TWO! Daigo: I think Yang is quite strong as well. His health isn’t that great but he’s got some strong attacks. Mago: Yang’s strength is with his Seien Enbu (laughs). That’s incredibly dangerous. Daigo: Yea but that’s a super combo move, so that’s not going to be used a lot. Mago: You’re right. And it’s only effective once Yang gets them in a corner and uses that. And compared to Yun, Yang has a lot less mobility. Tokido: The conditions to use Seien Enbu are pretty strict. His Mantis Slash FADC tactics are very strong though. Mago: I definitely let out a sigh of relief once Yang uses meter just to do FADC for that. Daigo: Well, I guess Fei-Long, Yun and Yang are the top characters in the game. There’s a little bit of a difference between them and the other characters. Mago: You don’t think Balrog is up there? Tokido: Zangief too…Daigo: You know, in SSF4, Balrog was definitely near the top of the pile, but I don’t know what he’s like in this version. Zangief is also very strong but he has a lot of characters that he loses to, so I don’t think you can really call him a true top tier character. What about Dee Jay and Makoto? They received dramatic upgrades since their debuts Daigo: Dee Jay has gotten a lot of improvements since Super, but I wonder how he is now? I guess he may be more powerful than Guile? Mago: To be honest I haven’t fought a lot against them so I can’t really go into detail about them. Tokido: Yeah there aren’t a lot of players using those characters so I can’t say anything. Daigo: He’s got a good crossup game on wakeup and his Ultra has been improved, so I suppose he’s stronger now. Mago: Speaking of which, isn’t his EX Machine Gun Blow much better now? It’s not only throw invincible, right? It doesn’t have any gaps, and really does a number on people. Daigo: Even if you can get away from a crouching LP or LK via invincibility you can still guard. (ed. note: VERY iffy on this translation, I will have to double check it to make sure it’s correct.) Makoto got a lot of nice perks, didn’t she? Daigo: Right now Makoto seems to have a lot of hidden potential. But when I tried her out, her ground game was not that good. Mago: Yes, her weak point is her ground game. But if you go crazy with her, she can be very strong. She’s got that explosive power. Together: “Go crazy”, haha. (ed. note: They are laughing because of the way Mago described it in Japanese, ブチギレ, thanks to noew for pointing this out to me) Mago: But yea, she is one of those characters that can fight because she just needs that one chance, that one opening, that one read that can end it all. By the way, Blanka seems to be pretty good too. Daigo: Without his rolling attack? Mago: Yeah, but I hear you can still use that effectively. Daigo: I’m not going to get into whether he’s truly good or not, but against Yun, Blanka’s electricity is a pain to deal with. I actually had Kindevu call me and ask “How do I deal with Blanka’s electricity!?” (laughs). I mean, you can use EX Tetsuzanko, but outside of that Yun doesn’t have much. Blanka is unexpected… what about characters like Ryu, Ken, Akuma? Everyone uses them, but how are they now? Tokido: Akuma is still strong, I think. Mago: Akuma’s style has changed though. He’s got a more samurai-esque fighting style to him now. Will he live, will he die? Daigo: What kind of image do you have of a samurai? (laughs) Tokido: I don’t think that image is very befitting a samurai. (laughs) Anyway, Akuma’s bad matchups right now are Yun, Yang and Viper. Daigo: Ken is also strong. Tokido: Ken has gone up in the ranks, hasn’t he? Daigo: Yeah, that’s why I was thinking about using him. He doesn’t have any real bad match ups. But to play that character you need a style befitting of his strengths. Tokido: Ken and Ryu do have good uppercuts this time around. Just having that move gives them a good advantage. Daigo: That’s what it comes down to. When I think about if a character is good or not, I look to see if they have a Shoryuken-style move. Not an invincible attack per se, but rather if the SRK motion will produce an invincible attack or not. The SRK command…? Daigo: Yeah, mashing is too good. (laughs) (ed. note: Daigo refers to ガチャガチャ, or literally spinning the joystick around and pressing buttons at the same time) Mago: Yup, mashing is pretty good. (laughs) Tokido: You really only need to do it once, but that’s honestly what it comes down to. (laughs) Mago: Speaking of uppercuts, Sagat is very strong now. Yun and Yang, and of course characters like Viper, Cammy and Akuma are now easier to fight. But it seems that Sagat’s only bad matchup is against Fei-Long. His bread n’ butter combo (Close standing MP → HK Chicken Wing → Close standing HP → Rekka-Ken) is effective against Sagat, and Fei’s standing LP comes out in 3 frames, which means you cannot use Tiger Knee at all. Oh yeah, Adon and Dhalsim are also pain in the asses for Sagat. How about Cammy? She was really good in SSF4… Tokido: As expected she has gotten nerfed. Mago: But I think she’s still really good. Tokido: I really hated how she could do Cannon Strike at any time, it was like she was constantly in the air. In Arcade Edition it’s been taken out and that’s a huge change for her. Mago: Yeah that must have been bad for Akuma. I guess for any uppercut-based characters that was a tough fight. Daigo: It was also bad for projectile characters. Even though you could avoid those with EX Spiral Arrow… Now when Cammy jumps forward she doesn’t have a choice in her attack, which is a big change. Mago: But she can still do a lot of damage once she gets in. Tokido: Yeah that’s her strength now I believe. Recently Sakura seems a bit dangerous, doesn’t she? Mago: I’ve been thinking that really, Sakura is strong as hell, isn’t she? Daigo: Yeah her attack power has been buffed a bit. Tokido: Her ability to buffer Shouoken off of Crouching MK is definitely strong. Mago: Crouching HP as an anti-air is crazy good too, even if you use it only once, most, if not all characters will eat it. Sorry to change subjects, but I feel that Adon is a really tough match for Fei. Daigo: Heh heh heh, I don’t think so. Mago: No, really, really, really, really. If you vertical jump with Adon against Fei, what can he do? Nothing! Adon can’t do a whole lot with that vertical jump, but neither can Fei. Daigo: No way! Even with that, Fei-Long is still going to win, the difference is huge! Mago: Oh whatever, that’s not true at all! Daigo: But that’s how it is, really. The footsies game may be a bit difficult, but the difference in sheer power is the determining factor. Mago: That’s a bit prejudiced… (laughs) Okay, finally, how’s Juri? Compared to SSFIV she’s gotten a power boost Daigo: Hate Juri. I don’t know why though. Tokido: I don’t know, her regular moves, they don’t seem that good? Mago: Yeah, that and her frame is so small. That really annoys me about her. (laughs) Daigo: Her ability to finish off opponents is rather weak right now, so I wonder how she’s going to turn out.
