Try using something like CrossOver Linux or Cedega.

Is there some sort of compatibility mode to allow you to use windows drivers for hardware?

accordin to apple web lowest macbook is 849.00

goin tomoro to the brent cross one before uni

That is the best one to get for what you want. Do you know anyone that works at Apple? If so get their discount and it drops price differently if you are getting 27.5%. Otherwise use your student discount.

There are wrappers and such, what're you trying to install?

Safe.

Haven't installed ubuntu but I've got one machine running windows that I'm considering switching over so I just want a bit of info on compatibility issues really.

Have you had any trouble installing hardware drivers?

Don't know much but most of my stuff worked worked normally;

Printer = It's a Brother Laser Printer. Just detected it as a printer and it worked, no driver installs.

Mouse/KB = Works.

Graphics Card, there was a tool call "Additional Drivers" under system > administration which detected what model GFX card I have then auto-installed ATI Catalyst and the drivers for it. I imagine it'd do the same for Nvidia cards too.

Also that USB tethering stuff on Android phones works out the box for Ubuntu, usually you gotta install some modem stuff on XP/Vista/Win7 but the networking icon on Ubuntu just says it changed from "auto eth0" to "auto usb0" and was browsing the net via 3G.

I haven't got any webcams or other stuff but so far I've had no problems with the devices above.

Best bet is using this to give it ago w/o having to partition and waste time incase something don't work. Wubi is very stable and can be moved to a real partition if you're satisfied with it. That's what I did, anyways.
