Londonstreetgangs.com 2005-2011

The ‘Gangs in London’ website began in 2004. The aim behind the site was to create a popular media site as a resource of street gang information for London. At the time there was very little, if anything, available on the internet about London gangs – a gap in the market. The creators having grown up in perceived gang areas of London all had a shared interest in the development, history and distribution of gangs in London and decided that this information should be shared for others with a similar interest.

It began on a free website builder at www.piczo.com/gangsinlondon by piecing together small bits of knowledge from various people from different parts of London. It was initially just a listing exercise that named all groups in London perceived as gangs incorporating everything from the small less sinister named crews to the higher level dangerous and organised crews. In some instances, urban music groups with members involved in crime made the early lists.

In the beginning, the understanding of what a gang actually was, was mutable and open to interpretation. The process of collating the information was accelerated when two very in the know people (JM from north east London and TJB from south London*) made large significant contributions to the site that really got it off the ground. It went live in November 2004 as a very basic website. In January 2006, the England Gangs discussion forum was created which invited people with an interest in gangs to come and comment on their respective areas. The forum became a useful resource in piecing together information on local gangs across London by hundreds of contributors.

*A huge amount of credit needs to go to these two people because they drove the site from the beginning and without them it wouldn’t be in the state that it is today.

Roadside G's are another gang of the 031 Bloods movement, they are also an urban music collective. They are based more in Brixton rather than Stockwell and are closely linked to C-Blocks (the Crawford estate) from bordering Camberwell in Southwark. Their younger generation are known by the acronym YRS (Young Roadside Gs). RSG were well known for their music video 'Cant Come to the Roadside' which aired briefly on Channel U before being removed at the request of the Metropolitan Police's Operation Trident team who deemed the video to be gang related. RSG rapper Jospeh Hylton-Reid, also known as RA, was recently put in prison for attempted murder despite claiming not to have been at the scene of the crime. The arrest came after a car was shot up by a Mac-10 in south London, the gunman jumped into a nearby vehicle and made off. The victims reported the incident to police and told officers that the gunman was RA. On receiving this information RA’s house was searched by police, however nothing was found and the officers asked his family to let him know they were looking for him. RA, supposedly baffled at the claim decided he would hand himself in to a local police to clear his name, however, on doing so he was arrested, sent to court and put in prison for a life sentence. The police reportedly had no evidence to link him to the scene, no DNA or gun powder residue, all they had is the testimony of an eye witness. No details have been released regarding the eye witness but it would be reasonable to assume they have their own track record with the police and may even have had personal conflict with RA. The information relating to the incident has largely been hidden from the public, the only article that had appeared online via the London Paper has since been removed, and the case does not appear in the Court report archives.
