Manchester City are increasingly confident of landing a blow on rivals United by signing Paul Pogba.

The 18-year-old midfielder only joined United in 2009, when the Red Devils were accused of 'poaching' the player by his former club Le Havre, but his contract runs out in the summer and negotiations over a new deal have stalled.

Pogba, who impressed after coming off the bench in United's otherwise poor Carling Cup quarter-final defeat to Crystal Palace, is available to speak to clubs from January.

The Frenchman is also wanted by Italian giants AC Milan and Inter, but his hero, Patrick Vieira, is a high-profile figure at City and could be key to luring Pogba across Manchester to Eastlands, according to the Independent.

Arsenal are also interested in the powerful youngster.

The bitter feud over Pogba started after Le Havre accused United of offering financial inducements to tempt Pogba into breaking his contract. United denied that, citing the fact Pogba did not have a deal in place, and they were backed by FIFA who allowed them to register the youngster in October 2009.
