Werder Bremen - Vulnerable at the back, fearsome going forwardWerder will be without their first-choice centre backs, with Naldo ruled out with a recurring knee injury and Per Mertesacker sidelined for some six weeks after fracturing his eye socket for Germany against Azerbaijan last week. That means Sebastian Prodl and Petri Pasanen will deputize at the heart of the defense in front of 'keeper Tim Wiese in what will probably be a 4-2-3-1 formation.Former Arsenal and Manchester United man Mikael Silvestre will be at left back, while, Clemens Fritz , man –of- the-match in Bremen's first-leg win against Sampdoria, will play on the right of defence.Silvestre is way past his best, and Tottenham could well unsettle the veteran.Philipp Bargfrede and Werder's tenacious captain, Torsten Frings , will sit in front of the back four providing them with protection and an option to start attacks from the back.In front of the midfield duo will be an attacking trio of Tim Borowski , Aaron Hunt and the brilliant Marko Marin .With Claudio Pizzaro out with a thigh injury he sustained against FC Koln, the three will be zipping about trying to give lone front man Hugo Almeida vital attacking support.Seeing as it is a home match for Werder, manager Thomas Schaaf will be urging Silvestre and Fritz to provide much-needed attacking width when Werder are in possession. Werder have a joker on the bench in the form of Marko Arnautovic . The 21-year-old Austrian striker is an extremely promising young talent and a lot of Bremen hopes rest on him for the future.
Tottenham - King returns, Van Der Vaart hoping to pull the stringsHarry Redknapp has some real injury worries, but while on previous occasions and at past clubs he has moaned about being "down to the bare bones," he has a strong enough squad at Spurs to just about cope.Carlo Cudicini will stay between the posts in place of the injured Heurelho Gomes, while stalwart centre-back Ledley King will return to the side, giving Spurs a massive boost.Alongside King will be former Arsenal and Chelsea man William Gallas , who had a decent game Saturday against West Brom despite being short of match fitness.Vedran Corluka will slot in a right-back, while another injury to Luka Modric means Gareth Bale will return to left midfield, in front of Benoit Assou-Ekotto .Wilson Palacios will attempt to break up Werder attacks from his holding midfield position, with Tom Huddlestone slightly ahead of him doing his best to dictate the pace of the game.Aaron Lennon will play on the right, and Tottenham will be looking to the speedy winger to expose Silvestre and catch him out of position when Spurs break. However, seeing as Spurs are likely to play a 4-4-1-1 formation, Redknapp will be warning Lennon and Bale to ensure that they are not dragged too far into the centre, leaving Silvestre and Fritz room to maneuver.Up-front could be interesting for Spurs. Roman Pavlyuchenko played just ahead of new signing Rafael Van Der Vaart at West Brom, but the Russian is likely to be replaced by the much-more-effective Peter Crouch , who will be returning after a back injury.Dutchman Van Der Vaart will start behind the tall front-man and will be looking to provide the midfield with an outlet and prevent Tottenham for becoming overstretched.Redknapp was impressed with Van Der Vaart on Saturday and will be counting on his passing qualities to open up Werder Bremen .However, due to a lack of match fitness, he isn't expected to play much more than an hour, and could (should) be replaced by Robbie Keane
Tottenham Hotspur (probable, 4-2-3-1): Cudicini; Corluka, King, Kaboul, Assou-Ekotto; Palacios, Huddlestone; Lennon, Van der Vaart, Bale; Crouch.Werder Bremen (probable, 4-2-3-1): Wiese; Fritz, Prodl, Pasanen, Silvestre; Frings, Bargfrede; Marin, Wesley, Hunt; Arnautovic. .
Hope fully we will see the right team with the right players this time, Kaboul should start over gallas, he looked really shaky on saturday and if charlie plays he hope he realises its a CL game and not training. If luka's fit he starts we were great till he came off.Ledders first CL match yeah f*ck*ng boiiiTeam i wanna see

much-more-effective Peter Crouch ,
Tottenham will only signal true ambition by ditching CrouchWith much attention being grabbed by the “did they didn’t they?” deadline day signing of Rafael Van Der Vaart, and then the Dutchman’s impressive debut at West Brom, minds at White Hart Lane have been pondering whether the arrival of their very own World Cup finalist will herald a bright new dawn. However, focus has been lost. Real ambition will only be demonstrated and sustained success achieved once Spurs rid themselves of Peter Crouch.First things first: Crouch is an able Premier League striker. You do not achieve a goal-scoring ratio of better than one in two for your country by being a bad player. In fact, at times Crouch has stood out (insert predictable height-based joke here) as a genuinely proficient striker: finishing only second to Kaka in the 2006-07 Champions League goalscoring charts and of course scoring the goals that first sealed Spurs’ place in the top four and then got them into the competition proper. In the words of the lazy journalist he is your stereotypical “handful”.But the question that Spurs fans and the Tottenham board should be asking themselves: is he the man to take them to the next level? And does he justify Harry Redknapp’s assertion over the summer, when responding to transfer speculation that he is not for sale: “not at any price”?Crouch is not a prolific goal-getter. Throughout his Premiership career he has generally hovered around the one in three to one in four mark. Or worse. Hardly the stuff of world beaters and even less impressive when you consider that in many of those sides, managers (Redknapp at Southampton and then at Portsmouth and Benitez at Liverpool) either built teams around him or at the very least played the kind of direct football most suited to his game. His most profitable Premiership season in recent memory? 12 goals in Southampton’s 2004-05 campaign. The season they went down.Crouch’s impressive European and International goal records actually support, not weaken the argument that he is not the type of striker to make Spurs genuine Champions League contenders. Of the 21 of Crouch’s England goals that were actually netted in competitive fixtures the bulk have come against vastly inferior opposition: for the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers read Belarus, Andorra and Ukraine; and for the 2008 European Qualifiers read Estonia, Macedonia and Andorra once again (a goal in the calamitous defeat to Croatia providing the only inconsequential exception). And what of that 2006-07 Champions League season? He netted 6 times. Only two of the goals came in the knockout stages and they were both against PSV when Liverpool were already 2-0 up and the tie near enough in the bag. Crouch is the type of striker to turn a victory into a rout or to punish sloppy marking against weak opponents in the preliminary stages of a competition. He is not a consistent big game player.Goals aside, Crouch’s all round skills set is definitely not of the A* Grade either. As tempting as it is to apply the “great touch for a big man” label the fact is Crouch was not cast in the same mould as, say, Tore Andre Flo. His touch is fair at best and his movement is often limited to knocking it down and making a beeline for the box. Hardly the kind of approach-play to strike fear into the hearts of Europe. Most frustrating of all, Crouch is beaten to headers time and time again. For a man of his stature he is inexplicably poor in the air.Whilst the above holds true it is actually Crouch’s debilitating affect upon the rest of his team that really makes his inclusion in the side counter-productive. With him on the pitch Spurs lack any form of guile: quite something when you have the likes of Luka Modric in your ranks. With the pace of Lennon, directness of Bale, and passing of Huddlestone (not to mention the addition of Van der Vaart) Spurs have one of the most varied set of tools to unlock even the securest of defences. Yet with Crouch in their midst players play to his, rather than their own, strengths. The result? More often than not: turgid football and a limited goal return.Redknapp ruled out selling Crouch in the summer which was most definitely an opportunity missed. He should not compound that error by seeking to rely on him through the opening stages of the Premiership and Champions League campaigns. Instead, planning a well thought out way of easing the striker out the door and replacing him with a player of genuine pedigree in January is the only way Tottenham will truly signal their intent as a credible major force in English and European football. Rafael Van Der Vaart, or no Rafael Van Der Vaart.

You're a better side than Citeh and Liverpool currently, it'll be tough but I'd fancy you over either of them to get 4th.Citeh and Liverpool have much bigger problems with their side, although you'll miss Defoe.
How do we have bigger problems than city?Defoe our main striker is out.City have Tevez, Ade, Cruz, Balotelli City strikers >> Spurs

This "rumour" wont seem to go away...

Tottenham have set their sights on signing Lazio striker Mauro Zarate in the January transfer window, according to Fifa agent Jose Alberti. The 23-year-old Argentine, who arrived at Stadio Olimpico last year, has been linked with a move away from the Serie A club. And Alberti claims Spurs are preparing a €25million (£20.9m) bid for the forward."Personally, I know that Tottenham would still be willing to take the player," Alberti told lalaziosiamonoi.it."About a month ago, I spoke with someone who is a worth a lot at the club, who assured me that Spurs had an offer of about 25 millions euros ready for Zarate."Alberti claimed that Spartak Moscow have also expressed an interest in Zarate, but admits a move to Russia is unlikely."Even Russia want him," added Alberti. "Spartak Moscow asked me about him, but Mauro would hardly accept that destination."Alberti feels a switch to Real Madrid could also be on the cards, but insists the striker is in no hurry to leave and is enjoying his time at the Italian club."If he leaves Rome, he could consider Spain and he should go immediately to Real," said Alberti."However, speaking with Mauro a few weeks ago, he told me that he came to Italy to play with Lazio. He is a fan of Lazio and has no intentions of leaving as yet."He added: "(However) there are some situations that could indicate a future far from Lazio for Zarate."
