I will let my football do the talking, says Ledley KingLedley King is confident he will be able to play a central role in Tottenham's bid to bring back Champions League football to White Hart Lane and earn a new deal in the process.
The club captain produced a typically accomplished performance at the heart of defence in last weekend's victory at Wolves and he was optimistic this week that he would be fit enough to face Liverpool on Sunday.
In that clash, Harry Redknapp's side are seeking to put aside the memory of their 5-1 thrashing by Manchester City in their first home fixture of the season in the Premier League.
King's knee problems are well known but it was a recurring groin injury, rather than his knee, that restricted him to just nine appearances last term. King's contract expires at the end of the season and Redknapp said last week the 30-year-old would need to play at least 20 matches this term to justify being offered a fresh contract but King is optimistic about the campaign ahead.
"It was a total nightmare last season trying to get the groin right, so I worked hard over the summer and coming into this season, it feels a lot better than it did," said King.
"I hope I'm just back to concentrating on looking after the knee now and hopefully nothing else will crop up. If I can just manage the knee, there is no reason I can't play quite regularly. I've played one game, so I don't want to talk too much about what might happen but at the moment, I feel fine.
"Anyone who's had injury problems would tell you that it's really difficult to get out of your head what might be around the corner. I don't want to jinx myself but I should be fine for the next game and hopefully for the remainder of the season.
"I don't feel the need to speak to anyone at the club at the moment. I'll try to let my football do the talking.
"If I can stay fit and play the games this season, the [contract] situation will take care of itself."
King's quality in central defence will be paramount, especially as Spurs are without their team captain Michael Dawson due to an Achilles injury, while William Gallas has still to recover from a calf problem.
Both men were crucial last season as Spurs progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League in their first attempt at the competition, yet Redknapp's side had to settle for Europa League football this term after being edged out by Manchester City and Arsenal for a top-four place.
Spurs were not as active as some clubs during the transfer window but King believes the addition of Emmanuel Adebayor and Scott Parker, along with goalkeeper Brad Friedel, to the ranks has revived a squad that had begun to look jaded.
"Emmanuel will bring something different to the team," added King. "You can see in training that he has a bounce in his step, which will rub off on other players and make the mood better. Scotty was brilliant at Wolves as well.
"They have different qualities to the players we've let go, so it's something fresh. We needed to freshen up a little bit. We'd played with the same group of players for a while and it was important to bring some new faces in to give us something different.
"Does the club need Champions League football? Of course it does and there is no reason why we can't finish in the top four this season.
"Having had the taste of it and done well in the tournament last year, the players felt like we belonged there so there is no reason why we shouldn't be striving for that again.
"Most of the teams have spent good money improving their squads so it's going to be tough and there are probably five or six teams who all aim to finish in the top four.
"We're confident in the squad we've got, though. It's one of the best in the Premier League and it's up to us to try to get there now."
Tottenham have invested substantially in trying to produce their own players but since King made his first-team debut in the 1998-99 season, nobody has come through the ranks to become a regular.
Redknapp is not thought to be convinced by the majority of the youngsters at the club, yet some of them challenged this opinion by producing a promising performance in last night's goalless draw at PAOK Salonika in the Europa League. Jake Livermore, Andros Townsend, Harry Kane and Tom Carroll all started in Greece, while Ryan Fredericks came on as a late substitute. King has seen a number of youth players fail to reach the first team during his time at the club, so when he shows enthusiasm for the current crop, it is worth recording.
"Some of the young lads we've got are really good players - the best group I've seen in a long time," he said.
"It's difficult for any young player to break through, so I can't say who will make it here and who won't but there are some really talented players at the club and if they continue to work hard and improve there are quite a few with a chance of succeeding."
It is highly unlikely that any of them will be involved on Sunday but if they follow the example King has set during his 13 seasons in the first team, their chance in the Premier League might come sooner than they expect.

But he has it all, height, strength, pace, reading of the game, good feet, composure, everything a modern day footballer would die to have he was born with.
