People seem to have a warped perception of what is good technique and what is 'culture/flair'. There are also varying styles of technique and obviously some players have better technique for particular skills than others.

Beckham and gerrard both have good technique. Crossing, long passing, shooting(striking a ball, not the same as finishing) they are both technically excellent at. There is not even a question about it.

Other players who i would describe as cultured who cant cross a ball or strike a ball as well as either of the above two, yet possess greater technique when it comes to ball control, short passing, dribbling (guys like iniesta) are seen as having better overall technique. Which they dont *necessarily* have but what sets them apart is thier mental skills.

Decision making being the main one. When to pass, where to pass, what type of pass to use. When to run, where to run, when to beat a man etc. The cultured and flair players do this better than your gerrards etc but these skills have no bearing on a players technical ability.

Spot on

pos thats the case different preceptions of technique I have watched Gerrard all his career he has crossed, dribbled, pinged, scored every type of goal. There is a reason why the biggest players in the world Schwinestiger,Maradona,Henry etc rate SG. England wont be able to produce a all round midfielder ever again. Guys like Wilshere ,Cleverly et al might develop technique which makes them Legends in their "specialised roles" we will have to see. Yaya toure and Gerrard are simply quite similar as in their peak you can play them from DM,CM,AM,Support Striker. Due to their threat when with the ball and ability to take the piss due to their physicality. I have seen both run through the midfield in a straight line score powerful strikes. There can be many great players in their positions. Toure,Gerrard, Alonso,Xavi,Pirlo are some of the best midfielders I have seen recently

Appreciate whats been given to you

No chance.

Current Chelsea midfield? They have played about 10 games and been outplayed by Man City and Atleti already this season.

Arsenal, immense in 02, undoubtedly deserved Champions. Invincibles incredible achievement etc. But would you have been saying this had Pires not dived to win a penalty against Pompey? Also, they drew 15 league games that year and (may be wrong on this) but recall they played 4 times v Man Utd that year - drew 2, lost 2.

Beckham was technically gifted

It's a different matter with strikers. Gerrard isn't Batigol lol

If you want to compare him to a striker I'd say he's Rooney

And Bergkamp > Rooney

I was comparing Batigol to Bergkamp because one was a more elegant striker than the other but they were still both top players and I think it's the same with Gerrard being compared to players like Scholes etc

Gerrard and Beckham's best technique by far is in striking the ball.

Again, if you are mentioning multiple aspects of technique such as dribbling, short passing and ball control then how can being supremely skilled in 1 technique (striking a ball) compare to being skilled in many techniques of ball manipulation?

Of course players who possess more are better overall, it's common sense.

Heres the thing, if your team was dominating a match, it'd be easy to pick a Paul Scholes to stay on the pitch, because you don't need to have players more adept at defending when you are dominating.

But what if your teams winning by a single goal and struggling to hang on? Which player do you take off? Steven Gerrard or Paul Scholes?

And thats part of what I mean when I say what else can you do with Scholes?

And thats not to take away from his offensive talents which are indeed rich, but there are players you look to take off if your team is struggling to hold on, Gerrard aint one of them. You only take Gerrard off if he's injured.

I don't think I did

Correct me if I am wrong

Some of them guys dominated a decade

Most of them were world beaters for 3-5 years

Like I said correct me if I am wrong

Flojo what were the like week in and week out on channel 13 on cable?

Best won the League, Ballon D'or and European Cup by the age of 22.

He had everything, you can't make a list of greats and not include him in it otherwise the list is incomplete.

He was doing in the 60's and 70's with heavy boots and balls what Ronaldinho and Messi were doing in the 00's.

I am not including him

I remember that time when you said Gascoigne was the best in the world for a period of time
