VIP2's Apple Mac Users....
i just ran onyx before doing a straight upgrade, was fine tbh. Only needed to upgrade my littlesnitch.
simply put:
non-retina: more file storage space, cheaper
retina: thinner/lighter, better performance, higher resolution
I'd only recently installec Maverick with the new SSD but decided to do a clean erase install anyway as the process is pretty easy...

What is this, like a diagnostic check to see if your apps will work with yosemite?
Which 1?
Onyx is maintenance program. Cleans your Mac.
Little snitch informs you of all incoming/outgoing network comms
all this wiping disks and using cleaning tools seems really unnecessary once you have an SSD
even with a HDD, not sure what benefit you're getting from that
Lil snitch >>>
That app is the truth
Benefit for me wiping my hard drive is reclaiming space... Think of all the software and shit that's been been acquired over the years that you no longer use or care about.... I've let it get so messy
Rather than spending hours going through and removing stuff individually, I'd rather take it back to factory settings, then install what I frequently use
Upgraded to Yosemite yesterday, took like 3 hrs in all...must be my sky internet...seems smooth so far.
Yeah
So much cleaner just wiping to install from scratch.
Pain I guess if you have loads of saved shit
i duno what the differences mean between the retina and non retina macbook pros
http://store.apple.com/uk/buy-mac/macbook-pro
gona jus get the retina one? tell me if im wrong plz cool cool
I wouldn't get a non-retina pro
Firstly, it weighs somewhere close to 5 tonnes, secondly it will struggle to handle anything past Mountain Lion, without going through NVRAM resets etc, and has less powerful and slower architechture
The only real positives I would say it has over the newest retina is removeable/upgradable storage
Retina
HDMI slot
2x thnderbolt slot
much better resolution
lighter
more powerful/faster
Non-retina
Ethernet port
Upgradeable storage
Internal optical drive
(slightly) cheaper
I would actually rather go for an air + mavericks + ssd over a normal 2011 pro

Hmm just over the top only because I've literally only had it 2 weeks.

I'm gonna backup whatever I need to tonight, then completely wipe my hard drive and start brand new with Yosimite
I've needed to start afresh for ages

If my Mac has basically nothing on it, should I still wipe before upgrading?

If you're happy with the way it's currently running, then an upgrade should be fine
Only really need to do a clean install if you want a fresh start, or you want to get rid of any issues
