there are skills you can gain from doing a history degree that employers in certain fields see as useful... e.g. law, accountancy, banking like spiderman said etc.

then why not make it easier for yourself and just do those degrees..

Because the quote was bullshit.

this is what i meant in the other thread about unis gassing potential students into thinking any nonsense degree they do will open up the world to them.

TBH if you do History you're doing a masters or you better have some relevant work experience or links.

well i got a few high links in banks, recently been planning on utilizing these

i enjoy studying history and it's a respected subject and has transferable skills that employers value, ie in research, journalism, PR

also a conversion to law could be done too

and even becoming a historian is a profession u can potentially do well from

i don't see the point in wasting money on a subject/course that i may not enjoy and then hate the uni experience, or even worse drop out

don't be deterred by what they're saying though, none of what they're saying is fact, all of it is opinion. do research for yourself look at statistics and other forums before making up your mind.

guys are coming like beacons of negativity, normal for vip2 though

mate its just called being realisitic. of course nobody wants to be a misery guts, but uni and education aint all rosey.

i think its only right that people give balanced opinions. f*ck all the "we-love-uni" party wagon which skew everyones view to be one sided, gotta be real about these things. helps others make a more fair and informed choice.

Why are people going on like all degrees that don't link directly a field of work are a waste of time?

By that logic anybody not doing a degree in Medicine, Engineering, Law or something finance-related may as well not bother with uni.

2:1 in History from a good uni, you've got options. History at Oxbridge = pick your job.

i have no problem with being realistic and i agree that you're wasting your time if you jump on the university wagon and scrape by. but you lot aren't giving a balanced opinion...

that's exactly what i got from reading the last few pages, that's not a balanced opinion at all. i'm just telling these yutes not to solely rely on the opinions of this thread, do your own research cause you'll find that everyone says different things about each degree. but obvious get-money schemes like furniture studies should be avoided, kinda goes without saying.

it's all down to the individual employer really and what he's impressed by, it's obvious that most employers would want someone with a degree specific to the job but that doesn't mean that there aren't employers that appreciate the skills and logicality given by other degrees.

c/s go to uni, do a reputable degree work your ass off and aim for a 1st if you have no other avenue. the degrees i'm doing don't lead into any career but i did them because i actually have an interest in them. if i did anything else i KNOW i wouldn't be motivated and would probably end up dropping out or coming out with sh*t grades. the only alternative avenue to uni for me is handing out CVs in westfield. f*ck that, if you've got a degree you're interested in and you're willing to put the work in, do it and get your money up.

even this isn't 100% true you know

fields like Recruitment, Marketing & Advertising, Journalism (BBC etc.) draw their graduates from people with history, english & language degrees and the like. There's no degrees specific to these jobs. Too many dummies seem to be under the impression that doing a degree in journalism = job at The Times. No, you need a degree in English Lit from top 5 uni. The fact that you managed to get a 2:1 from a top uni in a difficult degree is more impressive to an employer in a field that doesn't recruit specifically from certain degrees than having a degree from an avergae uni that could be more relevant.

@ Angelo, you don't agree that having Oxford/Cambridge on your CV is gonna get your application looked at ahead of other uni's, whether the degree is completely "relevant" or not? History degree at Oxford can even mean a job in the city.

safe for that prospects link axiom

Can't say I agree but I guess I am on the best Journalism studies course in the country. I don't want to be a reporter that much anyway so The Times probably aren't that high on my priorities. Probably move into magazine, web or even broadcast journalism depending on how good I am at that stuff next year

off the bbc website, 2006 article

The educational background of journalists has been much discussed over the last few days - with the Sutton Trust survey (read it here) of top journalists suggesting a significant bias in their education towards private schools and certain universities, above all Cambridge and Oxford...
