And yeah it's out of interest Yuri, however I'd think it'd be beneficiary if the employment I was looking for was in the entertainment sector no? cause if it's not then other things I can't see other things I'd wanna take (Film Studies) being much use either, and then there'd be no point in me going uni, I don't wanna be a doctor/lawyer/accountant and it sounds like that's the only thing uni is geared towards.

Uni degrees are based on two things.

Links to Industry and snobbery

Certain unis have sh*t reps overall but certain departments are known for being good and have good links with industry. Meaning that you will be given opportunities to do work experience/placements or be recommended for jobs etc. For example If a course is accredited by a professional body CIMA,CFA,RICS etc then you are more likely to get jobs as its a kind of stamp of approval from the industry that they believe the course is teaching you good stuff and not fraff. Therefore you're more likely to be employed. Certain companies run the same way, they like students from certain courses at specific unis because from past experience they know theyve been taught well.

The snobbery side of it slyly there is a hierarchy. Engineering courses are top dogs tbh. But dont get it twisted just because you do engineering doesnt mean you have to be an engineer. Lots of employers just look at graduate engineers and just think their course is hard and they are clever. They will be able to learn anything we teach them quickly.

Uni isnt really about what you learn in lectures. Its about proving you have the capacity to learn new things quickly and pick up skills fast. Your proof of doing this is just that you've done well in your degree.

If you wanna get into something specific work experience like internships is more important because it shows you have shown dedication to try and get yourself into a certain field, even though its not directly related to your course

what were your uni options spiderman? what made you pick Imperial?

imperial

loughborough

queen marys

cant remember the rest. obviously picked imperial because i managed to get the grades and it was the better uni, academically anyways. lets face it, your going to these places to get qualifications primarly. thats their function so obviously go to the one that would give u the best crudentials.

also i didnt believe all the negative hype, had no idea it was gonna be the way it was.

Jubez when it comes to what you're looking to do your potential body of work is way more important than any qualification you're gonna get from a uni; the only thing a uni might provide for you if you wanted to do a degree like Film Studies or something creative is possibly the industry links at the end of the degree, and really we're growing up in a time when every Tom, d*ck and Harry is shooting hood videos and interviews, so you're in a position to put together some kind of portfolio

We've spoken in the past briefly about your scripts and like I said if it's something interesting we got the means to produce it, like Yuri said in entertainment it's more about who you know and there's alot of creative types around

There's a possibility that after my work placement at EMI they might offer me a job and the fact I'm a 2nd year maths student didn't factor positively or negatively, she was surprised I even went to uni, so don't think the academic route is the only way forward for you, especially if you're not following a 'conventional' career path

well im at st georges now finishing my medical degree, my main issue was that i ended up losing a year and i knew originally that manchester wasnt for me but i still went anyway, i had always dreamt of going to kings but on a whim i changed my mind and the knock on effects it had on my education and personal life were not worth the 'caution to the wind' approach.

fair enough. people say that the living out experience is much better out of london though. was it good for you? all the other problems aside lol.

but i guess in the end thats not a major factor, the actual education and how your life for them few years pans out is the main issue.
