Well done bro, 66% is my bogey number swear down, got that last year myself as well as countless papers and exams, just waiting on results now, going to push for that first real hard next year.

/

I've got a meeting with the Queen Mary Uni head of economics on Monday, going to try manufacture a move from Essex to them for my final year, the issue is looking at all the tables and whatnot Essex is rated higher than QMU in Economics and only sits an average of 1.5 places either side of it on the overall rankings.

But for some reason I get the impression that QMU is always seen significantly better due to it's location, name and University of London member status, does anybody know if there is any truth to this?

I was accepted into them after college, I was even part of their masterclass scheme during it ,but I had to turn them down for personal reasons, now I feel things are pretty much sorted it might be worth a long-shot.

Thanks guys, its appreciated. Hope you all got/get what you were/are hoping for. It was a stressful exam period, next year I will make sure I'm much more prepared. (I'm sure I said this last year but such is life.)

I'd share the same opinion that QMU has a better name and being called University of London is more impressive - but I can't tell you much of what goes through an employer's mind.

QMU does beat Essex in the latest rankings in both Economics and overall. However its employability after 6 months rating is much lower than Essex and also student satisfaction seems to be lower - it only really beats it on how much it spends on students.

goiin through my old emails I found an essay I wrote when I was 16

if you got nothing beter to do....

dnt even remember what Havoc is

David Braund

How does genre and narrative create meaning and generate a response

in the opening sequence of Havoc (Barbara Kopple, 2005)

Genre and narrative define how a film is constructed. Genres are groups of films with the same sets of

conventions and stock elements, which the audience subconsciously breaks down and identifies.

However these codes and conventions can be bent or altered slightly, a technique referred to as

innovation. This also creates audience fulfillment as it’s something they may have not experienced

before, providing a more exciting and enjoyable experience. Narrative describes the way in which the

story is told. The audience follows the narrative of the film text to understand what is happening in the

film thus gaining a greater understanding of the story.

I chose Havoc because it mixes and creates a hybrid of genres to create greater excitement; it mixes

together crime, drama and romancei. It’s not un-common for films of both present and past to have the

same hybrid as Havoc, this film uses hybridity to draw in a younger audience, due to the content the film

has which includes, nudity, drugs, sex and hip hop musicii, all of which draw in a younger audience. The

film was produced and shot in 2003 by Barbara Kopple and stars Anne Hathaway. The reason I chose it is

because it’s not a Hollywood blockbuster, or an art house film at the other end of the scale, but a simple

independent film shining a light into a lifestyle, that is not mainstream, but ironically, inspired by the

mainstream mediaiii, which is an interesting and sometimes overlooked subject matter. I’ll be analyzing

the 2005 US unrated DVD release, although there’s little difference between this release and the normal

DVD release.

The film starts with the main character (Anne Hathaway) speaking, the sequence starts off black as the

opening credits showing the institutions involved in the film have just finished. Almost a second later her

face is shown; she is speaking directly into a video camera. The audience can quickly decode the image

and know it’s a camcorder because over the shot are lines at a right angle in every shot, a battery

symbol in the top left corner of the screen and “REC” in bright red on the top right side of the screen,

the audience immediately knows that a that is a recording, the recording is taking place outside, but

because it’s a tight close-up shot, it’s hard to decipher exactly what type of location it is. The camera is

not too shaky, but constantly moves from side to side.

“So you wanna know about us? ‘Bout kids from the Palace Aids? That’s easy right? Our parents moved

to the ocean and built walls facing the other way, they…send us to private school, they hire rent-a-cops

with uniforms and make them drive around in little Ford escorts, see. This sends a powerful message,

there’s us and there’s them, inside the circle and out. Living very sheltered lives.”

Immediately even before the titles start, the audience creates an idea about what they think the film is

about and general ideas of genre are already in place once the female character, played by Anne

Hathaway, has finished talking. Immediately after this the title credits start. The title sequence starts off

with an extreme long panning shot of an inner city area, overlaid with a gritty sounding, hip hop type

beat that mirrors the urban images shown. The speed of the film changes while panning and flying over

the city, from fast to slow as the film moves all over the city, the motion also slows as the lead character

names are shown and the title itself. Immediately after the title of the film is shown, a fly over of the

city is shown and the music “starts” as now a rapper begins to rap on it, giving away more about the

genre. The intermixed fast and slow motion fly over shots continue to show the names of the rest of the

cast, as the music becomes more aggressive, this time talking about guns, going as far as incorporating

“gun cocking” sounds into the music itself. The pans and fly overs show the scenery of beautiful hills and

the sea alongside shots of huge motorways, roads lined with cars and tall buildings. This can be

denotated as showing good and evil side by side, as the scenery is beautiful, whilst the cars create noise

and ruin the scenery.

The fly over then heads to a car park, and cuts back to the female character speaking into a video

camera. The next shot is a long shot that shows the female character jumping off the hood of a car and

introduces a male character who appears to be in his late teens, holding a camera, it’s clear that this is

the camera the female character was talking into as in the long shot she’d shown to talk directly into the

camera the boy is holding. This is quickly cut to a close up tracking shot of the female character as she

continues to talk into the camera. The audience will quickly assume that this female character is the

main character in the film, as it’s a common narrative convention to introduce the main character. The

focus then moves onto another male character, who is smoking what can only be assumed to be

cannabis, he also speaks to the camera in the same way the female character was. The male character

holding the camera begins to ask the other male questions, this would then lead the audience to think

that he is filming some sort of documentary, which is why the female character. So far the film contains

solely diegetic sound. This changes as the main characters and the people around them in the car park

spot a group of people who the audience can only assume are their rivals, the non-diegetic upbeat hip

hop music is added to create an atmosphere that something exciting may happen. Shots of the main

characters and their friends are intercut with shots of the opposing group as they seem to approach

each other in a non friendly manner, eventually the 2 groups meet. This is shown in an extreme long

shot that shows the subjects approaching from both sides, eventually meeting in the center, followed by

over-the-shoulder shots of the 2 main male characters of each group. At which point the non-diegetic

music becomes quieter, to allow the audience to listen to the dialogue. This immediately changes when

a fight breaks out between the two male characters, where upbeat music is added to mirror the

situation, which turns into a large feud as more and more people get involved in the fight. Quick edits

are used to emphasize the situation as well as medium close up shots and also footage from the camera

from the POV of the male character holding the camera. The sound of police sirens getting louder as

they get closer creates panic amongst the 2 groups which causes them to flee the scene. A range of

close ups, medium close ups, lmedium long shota and an extreme wide shot are used to show everyone

dispersing from the scene as they jump into their cars and drive off.

The opening five minutes of Havoc doesn’t give much away in terms of establishing the main characters,

such as information about their names, where they live. All that is shown are the main characters and

very little about their personalities. The characters clear relaxed use of recreational drugs shows that

their teenagers who maybe like to live on the opposite side of the law, which is a sharp contrast to the

mise-en-scene of the opening sequence which shows a beautiful area of suburban L.A. the opening

sequence also doesn’t give the audience much about the genre of the film, as there aren’t many generic

codes that many blockbuster films may throw into their films in the first 2 minutes. Certain things about

the film are clear, it’s a teen movie, but not a comedy like most teen movie’s have been. This thiscan

prompt a viewer to watch the film for the sole purpose of finding out what it’s about, as long as their

drawn into the violence, fast pace of the opening sequence. The opening sequence does also give the

audience an idea about the type of characters in the film, there’s the protagonist, the sidekick, the male

lead. All introduced in the first five minutes of the film. Through the opening sequence it’s easy to

predict that the narrative of the film will be pretty straight forward and quite predictable, as it doesn’t

seem to be following more than one story. Certain things about the film are clear. The generic codes

used in the opening of the film clearly indicate that Havoc is a teen movie, but not a comedy like most

teen movies of recent years (American Pie, Road Trip etc), this is not a comedy, but a clear

representation of urban culture influencing upper class suburban life.
