Lightning kills seven at South Africa nursery party

A fire caused by a lightning strike has killed seven people at a nursery in South Africa where parents and children had gathered for a Christmas party.

The end-of-year meeting was taking place in a tent set up on the premises of the school in KwaZulu-Natal, a remote area of eastern South Africa, on Friday.

According to South African news agency Sapa, 67 people were injured by the lightning strike.

'The clouds emerged and ultimately a huge storm started. The lightning struck the marquee killing five people instantly and two died in hospital,' Mthokozisi Duza, provincial disaster management head, told the agency.

At least 29 of those injured are believed to have remained in hospital over the weekend - including 23 in critical condition - while it's thought a two-year-old child, two parents, two teachers, a gardener and a nursery school director were among the fatalities.

The KwaZulu-Natal weather bureau has revealed that a storm warning was issued to the provincial disaster management office on Friday following predictions from a climatologist that there was a possibility of hail and winds in the area.

the birds suffered a trauma, not poisoning, its suspected that it couldve been lightning, but lightning hasnt been known to kill so many birds at once.
