Sid Lowe in Spain has been in touch and explained the Ander Herrera-Manchester United situation and it is a little bit more complicated than we first thought.

Sid confirms that the buy-out clause is indeed €36m but if the clubs cannot agree then the player would have to go to the league and deposit the money himself (and I think this is what happened with Sevilla's Geoffrey Kondogbia earlier this week, although his transfer to Monaco still hasn't gone through.

So if my understanding of this is correct, United would have to pay Herrerra the €36m for him to pay it to Athletic. And there is a huge problem with this as the money then becomes taxable at a rate of 52%! And that is obviously almost €19m, which changes everything.

From the Guardian live blog the other week

I swear that release clauses in Spain don't apply to foreign clubs?

I think they apply but there the tax isnt included to foriegn teams, so they have to pay another 30% or something on the clause

Bilbao, don't negotiate, when bids come in they tell you to look up his release and come back with that.

They stupidly did it with Llorente even when his deal was running down and he wasnt signing a new one, yet they still insisted clubs pay his buy out.

Manchester United have agreed to let 21-year-old Belgian defender Marnick Vermijl join Dutch side NEC Nijmegen on a season-long loan.

Vermijl joined the Old Trafford outfit in 2010 and was short-listed for United's reserve team player of the year award last term.

He did make his senior debut in a Capital One Cup tie against Newcastle last September but then failed to force himself back into the first-team picture.

Vermijl, who plays mostly at right-back, will hope to enjoy a good spell at the Dutch club to try and force himself into first-team consideration.
