They are probably the best grunge band around but get overlooked due to Nirvana (who are fiercely overrated to be honest) Would? I think fits your description of 'Untypically Soulful'. It was written by Layne while he was going through an awful heroin addiction (he died in 2002) and is an absolutely amazing song. I warn you though, you aren't going to like them straight away.
