Smith fury at Newcastle plans to offload himBy Soccernet staffJanuary 8, 2009 * Comment * Email * PrintAlan Smith is reportedly furious at Newcastle United's attempts to offload him to Middlesbrough as part of a swap deal which would bring striker Mido to St James's Park.EmpicsAlan Smith: Wants to stay at St James'According to the The Sun newspaper Smith, who arrived at Newcastle 18 months ago following a £6 million transfer from Manchester United, had not been told by his club that they were in negotiations with Boro.An indignant Smith, who was transformed from a striker to combative central midfielder while at Old Trafford, is understood to be determined to remain at Newcastle, but could be forced out by the club. The 28-year-old has been working on his fitness and could be ready for selection by late January after recovering from an ankle ligament operation, but it is reported that Newcastle could be prepared to let him rot in the reserves unless he agrees to the move.Injury has meant Smith has yet to appear for Newcastle this season, but in 33 appearances for the club in his first season he failed to score a single goal, though did win acclaim from supporters who appreciated his committed playing style.Meanwhile Newcastle have confirmed that striker Obafemi Martins will undergo hernia surgery in Germany next Monday.Martins has not played since suffering a groin injury shortly before scoring his side's second goal in their 3-0 Premier League win at Portsmouth on December 14.

Kinnear appears to know what he's doing.
Somebody tell me what did he say?
So what has he done wrong? He is managing a team that had lost all confidence, instilled confidence.A feeble squad, he is getting some results out of them, not beating the world but still fighting a good relegation battle.Small transfer resources, needs to offload the deadwood. And he is not not in the relegation zone anymore.Football isn't just about winning trophies, sometime the objective is to survive and bring stability that can later be built upon.
