Off the streets: Weapons seized as part of Operation Peyzac

By Lucy Purdy

A SUSPECTED gun-conversion factory has been uncovered in Haringey as part of an 18-month sting to tackle serious and organised crime in Haringey and Enfield.

A total of 16 firearms have been recovered and 16 people charged following Operation Peyzac, an intelligence-led attempt to snare violent, gun-toting gangsters in north east London.

The operation saw Enfield Council lease business premises in Fore Street, Angel Edmonton, to the police. The shop was staffed with undercover police officers and traded for almost a year.

A police spokesman said it opened in

an area “where intelligence indicated gang activity and associated criminality”.

A number of gun parts and ammunition were found at the suspected factory in Haringey although officers have refused to be drawn on any more details and say searches are ongoing.

Knives, swords, air rifles and a samurai sword, as well as more than a kilo of Class A drugs and bundles of cash, were also discovered during dawn raids last week, carried out by Haringey and Enfield officers as well as specialists from the Territorial Support Group and Specialist Crime Directorate. Another warrant was carried out at a house in Leeds.

North London Link Commander Simon Pountain said: “I’m extremely pleased with the results which are the culmination of a long-term operation and highlight our commitment to tackling serious and organised crime in our communities. We will continue to disrupt and arrest those involved in this type of criminality.”

David Tucker, Enfield’s Chief Superintendent, who headed up the operation, added: “Significant resources have been devoted to Operation Peyzac over many months. We won’t tolerate violence and associated gang activity and always ensure we use a variety of tactics to track down criminals and bring them to justice.

"We know we have the support of the wider community to combat violence.”

Disarmed

Wednesday, 28 April 2010

By Nick Tarver

AN UNDERCOVER police operation has netted 16 firearms and a hoard of drugs after officers opened a shop in Edmonton in a bid to catch gun-toting gangsters.

Last Wednesday officers from Enfield police, the Territorial Support Group and armed police, swooped on 22 homes across north London.

So far, 16 people have been charged, 12 of whom are from Enfield and Cheshunt, following the raids. These followed an 18-month operation – codenamed Peyzac – to target gangs and gun crime in Enfield.

It has emerged that as part of the operation police leased a shop in Fore Street, Angel Edmonton, from Enfield Council and staffed it with undercover officers for nearly a year. However, the exact nature of the business cannot be revealed for legal reasons.

During one of the raids in Haringey, police also discovered an illegal gun conversion factory, several gun components and ammunition. At another address, knives, swords, air rifles, a stash of class-A drugs and bundles of cash were found. The 16 handguns, along with a kilo of drugs, were recovered prior to the raids.

David Tucker, Enfield’s Chief Superintendent, said: “Significant resources have been devoted to Peyzac over many months. We will not tolerate violence and associated gang activity within the borough and will always ensure we use a variety of police tactics to track down criminals and bring them to justice.”

A council spokesman explained that, while many people visited the business legitimately, the undercover officers were approached to become involved in criminal activity.

Simon Pountain, North London Link Commander, said: “I’m extremely pleased with the results which are the culmination of a long-term operation and highlight our commitment to tackle the issue of serious and organised crime in our communities.

Rob Leak, chief executive of Enfield Council, said: “I’m delighted that this operation has been successful but our work is not done. It is important that we continue to work closely with our community, police and other agencies to maintain the progress made.”

Enfield police 'shop' nets 16 guns and criminal network

Guns seized during Operation Peyzac

Eighteen people were arrested in dawn raids

Sixteen guns and drugs have been recovered by police during an 18-month covert operation to target gang activity and gun crime in north London.

Officers set up a shop in Haringey, north London, to serve as a front where people could hand over weapons after using them.

A suspected gun conversion factory in Haringey was also discovered by police.

Eighteen people have been arrested in Enfield, Haringey and Redbridge over suspected firearms and drugs offences.

Officers made the arrests during dawn raids at 22 addresses in north-east London and one property in Leeds on Wednesday morning, following Operation Peyzac.

'Criminal networks'

Several knives, a samurai sword, two air rifles and Class A drugs and money were found at another address during the raids, police said.

The firearms along with drugs were recovered before the arrests.

During the operation police found components of firearms and ammunition at the suspected gun conversion factory.

Enfield's Chief Supt David Tucker said the operation was aimed at "criminal networks within the borough after concern was raised by the local community some time ago."

He added: "Significant resources have been devoted to Operation Peyzac over many months."
